The Original Island Shrimp House (TOISH) opened its doors for business in late July of 2015. The restaurant was founded on the belief that really good, really fresh seafood served in a casual atmosphere was possible in the great Midwest. The casual atmosphere and interior design are meant to emulate those little gems one finds along the seaboard states from Maine to Florida, mostly when on vacation; you know – the places you never forget. The Original Island Shrimp House brings you the fresh taste of lobster, chowder, clams, scallops and calamari from New England; shrimp and jambalaya from the Gulf of Mexico; and king and snow crab from the icy waters of the Bering Sea.

Island Shrimp House delivers a fantastic overall dining experience, especially when it comes to customer service and hospitality. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind our server was professional, patient, and made sure our table felt taken care of from start to finish. Service like this truly elevates the experience.
The seafood quality is excellent and very fresh, from the shrimp to the lobster and crab. Presentation was beautiful, portions were generous, and you can tell they use high-quality ingredients. While some of the dishes were a bit less flavorful than expected based on the Facebook photos and promotions, the seafood itself was clearly premium. The breaded shrimp was very crispy and firm more crunchy than tender… for my taste but still made with quality shrimp that others at the table enjoyed.
The atmosphere is lively, clean, and inviting, making it a great spot for groups, celebrations, or a seafood night out. With their top-tier service, fresh seafood, and fun vibe, Island Shrimp House is definitely worth visiting and with a little bolder seasoning, it could be absolutely next level.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for great seafood, friendly staff, and a memorable dining experience.
My brother ordered the shrimp po’ boy and garlic fries and said they were amazing. I got to try the garlic fries as well, and they were great — though I wouldn’t recommend pairing them with the lobster. The hand-cut fries were a much better match and nicely seasoned.
The only small downside was that the coleslaw and potato salad portions were a bit on the smaller side. Overall, a great experience and definitely worth coming back.
We couldn’t decide what to get as first time patrons so we tried everything we could. From the clam chowder, fresh fried clams, and chilled smoked shrimp to the lobster roll, lobster mac & cheese, and peel and eat boiled shrimp everything was mouthwateringly good to the last bite! Oh, and don’t forget dessert! The key lime tart was a perfect finish even though we were stuffed.
Plus, they switch up their menu with daily and monthly specials so there’s always something new to try. We’ll definitely be frequent customers here now that we’ve discovered it.
We drove all the way from the south loop and came on a Sunday and ordered the following : lobster roll, jambalaya and cornbread, Diablo shrimp, mussels in a white wine basil sauce.
I ordered the lobster roll that came with 50% more meat for $45 it was worth it!!!! The bread and lobster came out piping hot it was made fresh to order! The lobster had so much flavor from the butter and it was soo good! The bun was hot and toasted and buttery but I think it could have used more butter/garlic flavor, it was missing something but it was still good. The lobster was my favorite part it was flavorful and not just plain tasting. Highly recommend!!!!
The jambalaya soup and cornbread were delicious! The soup had a nice kick to it and I wish they served larger portions bc it was so flavorful and spicy. The cornbread was also very good and semi sweet which paired well with the spices in the soup. Highly recommend too!
The mussels in white wine basil sauce came with garlic bread and it was tasty but the white wine sauce was overly salty, way too much salt! The garlic bread was crunchy and flavorful and great for dipping in the sauce but unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy the sauce bc it was way too salty.
The Diablo shrimp was good the shrimp was cooked to perfection and not overly chewy or overly cooked. The Diablo sauce was spicy which was to be expected but it was also sour which I did not like. I will try the butter and garlic shrimp next time.
Overall I was satisfied with all the dishes except for the wine sauce for the mussels. I absolutely enjoyed the lobster roll the best!
I could not give five stars because of the waiter. He took our order promptly and even went over the menu which I appreciated but he never came to check on us and didn’t even bring our food. Another server brought our food and after that nobody came to our table and not even once to see if we needed refills on our drinks or if we need extra napkins or just to ask us how the food was. I saw everybody else being serviced and nobody came to our table not once after our food was served!
If they would have come and checked on us I would have given five stars. We spent a lot of money nearly $100 to eat here and I would think that the service would be better, at least check on us to refill our drinks!
I will say that they were busy as it was 45 minutes to an hour before closing time so maybe that’s why. So I will give them a second chance and probably return in the future, maybe not right away, but if the service is crappy on my second visit I won’t come back, especially since we travelled quite a bit to check this place out.
