Back when I first tried this place, way before their rebranding, I really, REALLY, didn’t like it. My husband on the other hand enjoyed their food. It took me a few years with several tries sprinkled throughout to … acclimate to the food here.
Now I tried a handful of items off the menu throughout the past decade, and for a LONG time (years) I simply refused to eat the chicken soft tacos, because without fail, EVERY SINGLE TIME, I’d end up with bone fragments or bits of cartilage or something painful in my mouth. I must have had the worst luck ever, because my husband never experienced that.
Luckily, since the rebranding, I haven’t encountered that issue, and now all we order (on the rare occasions that we do) from here are the regular crunchy beef tacos, and the chicken soft tacos.
They hold till the next day rather well, I’ve even eaten them 2 or 3 days out (I’m a big fan of leftovers, with a gut of steel apparently), and they are a fantastic vehicle to get my favorite hot sauce into my face.
Now while I do like the food these days (sporadically), I would never call it Authentic Mexican Cuisine. In fact, we don’t even call this place or it’s food by it’s proper name. We just call it “ghetto tacos” cause that’s exactly what it is. No shame in that, it does it’s job valiently, but it’s defintely like … dollar store Taco Bell? It works. So every once in a while my husband will look at me and ask “want ghetto tacos”?
All in all, not a favorite place of mine, but much better than they used to be. I’ve included 2 pics of the beef tacos, and one of the chicken, so you’ll be able to tell exactly what you’re getting into.

Not impressed. Very few options and NO SUBSTITUTIONS allowed. We waited quite a while in line for what you see below. My husband got the food in the tray, which doesn’t look appetizing at all, plus a taco, some chips and cheese dip. I cannot vouch for the taste of his food. I did not care for my food, but he said his was okay, so that’s why I gave it two stars instead of one. For comparison, he said Taco Bell was better, so there’s that. Regarding my order, I specifically asked what ingredients came on each item I ordered. I was told the tacos had meat, beans, cheese and tomatoes. As you can see, it’s just beans and cheese. I wouldn’t have gotten it if I’d know that. Same for the chicken burrito I got. I was told one thing and sold another. There topping choices are limited to start with and with their “no substitutions” policy, I was careful in my ordering and they managed to mess up both items. Needless to say, I am annoyed. If not for my husband, I would never visit this place again.
Update: We still have not gone back and my husband refuses to eat there.

We drive from Salina just for this food every once in awhile. Even though the name changed it still tastes like the good ol Taco Grande from childhood. And the recent remodel is so nice! Indoors and out. The drive through has been updated, no more holes! And they added a patio with nice tables and umbrellas. Our family comes for the Sancho every time plus maybe a few tacos and taco burgers. The cinnachips are really good as well as their sauces.

Worst food I’ve had ordered a been and xjeese burrito. So little cheese you basically ally got beens. Taco. Burger the bun was old ans hard. Had the ask the window guy dor my change and you could tell he was pissed. No wonder I was told by Co workers not ro order there. Never do it agaim

I got a #3 to go. The shim that severed me was nice. It was a long wait for the worst food I had in a long time. Absolutely awful. The meat in the burrito looked like it had already passed through my digestive system. The beans and rice were tolerable. I feed it my dog along with the lousy taco burger I had already purchased for him. Very disappointed overall

I selected The Original Grande for dinner during my single-night stay in Abilene. As soon as I walked in, the first thing I noticed were several aromas that suggested that everything here is made fresh. I wanted to sample a little of everything (don’t worry, I arrived hungry!), so I ordered the chili cheese nachos, a beef soft taco, a bean and cheese burrito, and a pack of “cinnachips” for dessert. All the food was hot, fresh and very delicious, particularly the burrito, which was not lacking in melted cheese. I was also pleased to discover that they serve horchata next to the tea dispensers. They also offer a bar with sauces and garnishes (pico, onions, jalapeños); however, this is where I found the only drawback of my meal. The picante and verde sauces both had a noticeable hint of sweetness, which I found a little strange. The red sauce and pico were delicious, though, and the onions made a nice addition to the chili cheese nachos. Overall, this was a great meal and a good choice for dinner.

When it was Taco Grande it was good. Now its not so good. I don’t mind paying more then I did before but I at least want my moneys worth. I paid $1.99 for a side of rice that was half full at best. When I called to speak to a manager, there was none there. That would explain the long wait time and no cars in the lot. Ill go back to Ponchos in salina. Its both quick and good there.

We are visiting Abilene and wanted a quick lunch. We were greeted when we walked in, our order was taken quickly. I ordered a Taco Burger and a Crisp Taco. My husband ordered the Chicken Nachos. I wished I had a 0 star rating button.
My Taco Burger and Taco had so much grease in the meat that it had completely soaked through the bun and taco shell by the time the food was delivered to our table. I took one bite of each item and took them back to the counter telling the young lady there that this food is inedible. I asked her if I could get a couple of chicken enchiladas. Then, I believe it might have been the assistant manager who came over and told me that he would have to charge me for it! I said there was no way I was paying for it. He had to go back and check with the manager. Then I was told they would make the enchiladas for me at no charge.
While I waited at the counter for my new food I watched, I assume the manager, pull out the pan of taco beef and proceed to drain the grease out of it. It was disgusting.
The enchiladas were soggy, and the cheese was way over melted on the top. Their only redeeming factor was the chicken had good flavor, so I ate that and left the rest.
The Chicken Nachos were sub-par, with very little chicken on them.
If this is the best Mexican Fast-Food Abilene has to offer I feel so sorry for this wonderful town.

The food was cold, bland and waited quite a bit of time when I was the only person there. I waited to take my order and had to constantly repeat myself to the person working. They were new and I give them benefit of the doubt but need to work on their listening skills. The other dude working seemed like he didn’t want to be there. The restaurant has gone down hill for years since the mascarenos sold it. Poor food quality, poor management, poor work quality. I most likely won’t be bringing my business back.
