Just got done having my birthday dinner here and couldn’t be happier from start to finish of our meal. We had a table of four and ordered the following- she crab soup (special), French onion and mushroom soup. She crab is more sherry forward but love the addition of some lemon and dill. French onion was great. Mushroom soup was well loved by our mushroom lover with the nice touch of a puff pastry top. We ordered the side of Brussels as an app and they were easily in my top 3 in all of Charleston. I mean absolutely amazing. For entrees we ordered full rack of ribs, garlic shrimp pasta and the fresh catch which happened to be striped sea bass. Entrees were outstanding a great portions. Upgraded sides to Mac n cheese and well worth it. Loved the shell pasta with bread crumbs. It cradled that amazing cheese sauce and was a perfect bite. Our waiter was outstanding even though I don’t remember his name. I can’t wait to go back to try more of their amazing menu.

We were given a NDG gift card, and have had amazing meals at Marbled and Fin, Delaney, and Husk, so decided to give The James a try.
It was a Saturday night, and cold, but the place was packed. So packed that we had to wait almost 20 minutes for our reservation. I get it, things happen, but that was a long wait. Would have been great if we had been offered a complimentary drink while waiting.
We were finally seated, and sat for a while without anyone coming over to bring us water or say anything. They were busy, but there were plenty of wait staff standing around. Once our server came over, he was great, but at that point it was almost 30 minutes after our initial reservation time.
Food:
We ordered the crispy calamari app, the spicy Caesar salad, the Maryland crab cake sandwich with fries, and the pecan crusted chicken.
The calamari was not crispy – the breading was soggy and the sauce was overpowering, which was disappointing. Would have preferred the sauce on the side, because it was good.
The salad tasted flat – no hints of Leon or saltiness from the anchovy in the dressing.
The crab cake was good. I liked the lumps of crab and the ratio of crab to breading, but it could have used a little old bay. The bun was tasty. The fries were well seasoned but not crispy.
The chicken was moist, but the pecan crust didn’t taste like pecans nor was it crunchy.
The sweet potatoes were delicious, and the cherry sauce was tasty.
We had a glass of wine, the James island iced tea, and an espresso martini. The cocktails were fine. The James Island iced tea was more lemonade than iced tea.
All in all, it was fine. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t somewhere we will be rushing to try.

We are definitely heading back for dinner. I had the prime rib melt and it was amazing. The fried green tomatoes were so crispy and delicious. Great drinks, great staff, and awesome food.

Good food but this is all they gave me for 4 people, the restaurant scared me with the dimmed lights and I felt haunted. There was too much sexual tension between me and the cheeseburger, and the French onion soup— while delicious and creamy— reminded me too much of my ex to properly enjoy it. Would go again 8/10

Really enjoyed my visit to the James. Started with rolls and the honey butter was delicious! Then had the French onion soup that had great flavor but was a little on the salty side and finished with the burger that was cooked perfectly! Chocolate cake and espresso martinis pictured below.

IMHO, this isn’t the place to celebrate a special birthday if you’re hoping they might do a little something for you…
My mom used to go to a Greek restaurant that was there prior. She had heard it was nice and there was a wait to get in so she wanted to go to celebrate her 80th birthday (that day), my guy’s birthday was the day before, and my sister, who surprised us (she lives in Indiana), had a birthday 2 days before and drove down.
I had the chicken piccata, which apparently doesn’t come with pasta or potatoes, so a heads up for you, that’s a $5 add-on. It also was the favorite dish from the night.
My guy and sister shared the ribs and a small prime rib. They both were debating between the 2. They were happy someone didn’t get stuck with the ribs. The ribs we thought were just “good.” (The slaw wasn’t the best). The prime rib was better, but I’ve had just as good other places. (Our first visit, I had the prime rib sandwich, so I wanted to try something different*)
My mom and her other half shared a large prime rib and a single crab cake. (We weren’t impressed by the $20 crab cake. My sister and I had a small bite. That was enough for me) I guess I don’t eat out enough, but with those prices, I would recommend this place but with noting the prices to someone.
I’m sure my business won’t be missed because they are always packed. I’ve only eaten there twice because it’s hard to get in.
Getting a reservation for more than 4 takes calling in. We did like the reminder text. The restaurant is clean.
My mom notes that they wanted us to buy a dessert so they could put a candle on it… she didn’t feel like it was worth it.
Yes, it’s definitely a nice place for dinner, but we probably won’t be celebrating anything special here, or at least not on my dime.
And for me… after both meals, afterward I’m bloated. Both times I left with half my meal. I did try at least a bit of the ribs, prime rib, and crab cake. And stole a few fries tonight.

Breezy
Accidentally stumbled into this establishment after checking out the festival lights nearby. The James was a pleasant and unexpected dining experience. Service by Robbie was warm, friendly and professional. He had great recommendations and was knowledgeable about the ingredients. The menu was not large but had a good selection of classics.
Ambience was good, clean and well decorated–pretty tree! Food was executed well, coursed out appropriately, flavorful, and served hot. It seems like a low standard to reach but overall we’ve been underwhelmed by the restaurants here in Charleston during our trip.
Mushroom soup, Caesar, prime rib, ribs, Brownie skillet….All solid choices. My only suggestion (if I’m being picky) was the ice cream to Brownie ratio. The ice cream cuts through the rich fudge brownie, another half scoop would have been perfect. Still very good.
Such a rarity post Rona to find a restaurant still hitting all the marks. Great job everyone, and thanks for keeping good food and service alive.

We made reservations for our anniversary. We were served complimentary champagne to celebrate. We got the Spinach artichoke dip to start, it was full of cheese which is how I like it! I got the crab cakes, they were the best I’ve ever had. It was actual clump crab meat instead of the regular type where it seems as if it’s been put through a food processor. They were SO dang good! My husband got the prime rib and thought it was equally as good. I’m giving the spicy marg 5 stars too for presentation but unfortunately was not a fan of it.
