Oh, boy, was it good! The service was fast and friendly, the food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable in relation to the amount of food given.
We started with their loaded cheese fries appetizer and chose the Carolina BBQ pork option. The meat was “piled atop hand cut french fries with bacon jam, caramelized onions, two cheese blend and our made from scratch sharp cheddar cheese sauce.” House made chipotle ranch dressing was served on the side.
I was a bit dubious about both the Carolina BBQ topping and the bacon jam. I’m not a big fan of Eastern NC BBQ, and I couldn’t imagine bacon jam. Paired with the various cheeses and other ingredients, they created an explosion of complementary flavors that had me hooked from the first taste.
For my meal, I selected chicken and vegetables in a traditional hibachi sauce with fried rice. I opted to try both the ginger sauce and the yumyum sauce available on the side. The hibachi chicken and vegetables were cooked well and had lovely flavor from the hibachi sauce. The fried rice didn’t have any eggs or vegetables, but it tasted great anyway. I enjoyed how the ginger sauce paired with the vegetables, but I absolutely loved the chicken dipped in the yumyum sauce.
My husband really enjoys hot (spicy) food and also selected hibachi shrimp and vegetables. He chose the Volcano sauce and had fried rice as his side. He also requested both ginger and yumyum sauces on the side. He was very pleased with the volcano sauce and had me try a bit. You could feel the warmth spreading inside your mouth after the first bite, and although it instantly gave me heartburn, he happily declared the shrimp the best he’d had in a very long time. When we returned home about an hour after eating, he was inordinately pleased to announce that his lips were still numb.
I mentioned that the portions were generous. I ate only half of my food and saved the rest for today’s lunch. Even so, I ate more than I should have last night and felt a bit uncomfortable.
My kids wanted a taste of my leftovers, and now they all want to go eat at The Iron Lantern. If that doesn’t tell you that the food is GOOD, you don’t understand how picky kids can be.
The food…. First, let me say that I ordered a menu item to take home for later (just because it sounded so good… BBQ’d pulled-pork nachos; still looking forward to these). But onward to our meal. To start… my side salad. Mixed greens, a bit of tomato, and some red onion. No thousand island? No cheese??? But the bleu cheese dressing more than compensated. Truly, I think this is the best Bleu Cheese dressing I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Even my wife (who NEVER orders bleu cheese) enjoyed it. … So she orders a burger. With all the amazing choices… Why??? Nonetheless, I think it was delicious. The bacon alone would’ve been amazing with a couple of over easy eggs… lean and done just right. Now… Are you ready for this?? Crab-stuffed manicotti… wonderful crab blend stuffed within two large perfectly ‘al dente’ manicotti tubes… bathed in a creamy tomato bisque… blanketed in a ‘just right’ ration of cheeses. Really quite amazing.
The atmosphere…. Again, as this is a recent startup, some work needs to be done in the ambiance arena. Currently, there is no personality or decor. This should be easy an easy fix. It was a bit cold in the restaurant (understandably, I think). But I do hope they’ll address this concern to match the coziness the name implies.
Summary: Great food, fair pricing (given today’s market), friendly staff. Looking forward to my next visit. In closing, I really enjoyed the relaxing music selection of 70’s and 80’s (put together by one of the staffers… Thanks C).
