As I stood outside in the freezing cold, staring at the map on my phone, I noticed an inviting cafe beckoning me for a hot drink. A 2 hour walk justified a hot chocolate, surely. Blatantly unaware that the cafe was shut, I walked straight past the “CLOSED” sign and enquired about the only thing that makes winter okay. And, gratefully, they gave us hot chocolates, whipped cream and marshmallows on top just like the Christmas movies (I live in HD). Might I add, these drinks were on the house, because good vibes are currency on a Monday. AND IT WAS DELICIOUS.
So, as a grateful young(ISH) lady, I thought I’d take a photo and give them a shout out on the socials. AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?!
YOU COULDN’T MAKE IT UP!!!!
The sound of scurrying footsteps on the roof was followed by the quick dropping down of a ladder, and sure as sure, my eyes could not believe it, but he was there…. It was only SAINT NICHOLAS himself. FREAKIN SANTA! He swish swooshed his way down that ladder and backflipped into the cafe garden. I mean, he’s smooth. CENTURIES of experience. Said he’d smelt the hot chocolate while he was cleaning the chimneys ahead of his Christmas rounds and wondered if he could have a sip. Sharing is caring, but now we both have a cold…
Also, after a long chat over the fence I can now confirm that Santa and Mrs Clause are in an open relationship, so if anyone is into 1700 year olds, you can write them a letter addressed “To The North Pole” – they are seeking both unicorns and “new friends”.
Moral of the story? Don’t share your drink with old strangers, you might make them sick, but DO GET A HOT CHOCOLATE FROM THE HONEY POT – You could catch a Santa too! ✨
The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, perfect for catching up with friends over a pot of tea or grabbing a quick, tasty bite if you’re passing through. I particularly loved the thoughtful touch of welcoming dogs – complete with treats for our four-legged friends!
The café has a real charm to it, with great attention to detail and a warm, homely vibe. It’s the kind of place you find yourself wanting to return to again and again. Highly recommended!
You can park in the local free car park (fits about 20 cars!) or you can park along the street.
We’ll be back!
Might have to come back and treat myself to a full English next time round…
Despite having already closed down their hot food kitchen, they improvised and made a very nice cheese and pickle sandwich for me and were happy to make tea for me as well. Under other circumstances I’d have ordered cake for afters, given how many delicious cakes they had available.
They also offered an outdoor spigot to refill my water bottles (twice, different employees) which suggests they were thinking about my situation without me asking. Finally, since they were closing they gave me one of their last bananas — again, offered without me asking.
They only have a small garden and normally I don’t think they can accommodate bikes inside. I’m not sure where else to park them (when you arrive 10 minutes before close and don’t have time to look around), but in my case the garden had already emptied and they suggested I bring my bike in. I wouldn’t expect this, and am sharing just because it (again) shows how attentive they are.
Lots of other gems in there as well.
