Many Local Ppl recommend this store or restaurant, the salad is very fresh, there also has the sweet pie, pizza, and coffee, homemade food, and the building appearance is really beautiful. The food is fantastic.

Home-made food that tastes great! A fine local addition. Nice stop not too far off the interstate and you avoid the fast food chains!

The Homestead is a down to earth, homey, ‘at your grandmother’s house’ atmosphere. It is a mix of prepackaged items with a salad bar laid out in a buffet style. It also offers canned goods, candies, and pre-made frozen pies that have not been baked, so if you can keep them frozen for the ride home, you get a fresh-style pie to enjoy at home.
They also offer a variety of unbaked, prepared items such as biscuits and lasagnas. There are cake and pie slices for dessert, canned goods and jellies on the shelves, and other items. The menu offers a lot of flatbread sandwich options. The dining area was roomy.
The knocks are that the menu is somewhat limited, but the other offerings, such as the shelved and frozen take-home items are plentiful. The staff is friendly when you can find them. The staff stocks, prepares food, and rings you up. There is no wait and locating a cashier to pay for items required soms effort. There is an outdoor eating area.
Overall, if you want a slow, relaxing lunch spot, this is a good place to sit and wile away the time. However, I did consider it slightly pricey for the offerings. When I am in the area again, I want to try their jumbo cinnamon roll.

Nice atmosphere for something a little different. Food is good plus you can stock up on frozen soup and other items. It’s a 2 1/2 hour drive from Fort Wayne but worth the drive.

The Homestead is a nice local cafe & bakery with a small store as well.

I gave it three stars because the cafe fell short at accommodating food allergies. Their menu online advertises “gluten-free options,” and the cashier informed us that gluten-free buns are available for any sandwich. However, all sandwiches are prepared on the same surfaces and with the same equipment, so cross-contamination is almost a certainty. The only celiac-safe gluten free option is the salad bar, which was not exceptional by any means.

The owners are obviously aware of the need for gluten-free (and other allergen) options, but fall short by not dedicating kitchen space for safe preparation. This seems like a small and rather inexpensive upgrade that could elevate the restaurant to a great option for allergen-sensitive patrons (other restaurants have no problem with this). Unfortunately, they are unaware or unwilling to accommodate in this regard.

The homestead is situated in the middle of the I-65 corridor, and is one of the only local non-fast food restaurants between Merrillville and Lafayette that I would have given a chance to have gluten-free options. I was disappointed that the restaurant did not deliver on this expectation. In my opinion, this is a lost opportunity to have a good allergen-friendly option in a small town situated by a busy travel corridor.

I am willing to give The Homestead another try, and will gladly raise my review to 5 stars if proper efforts are made to help people with food allergies feel comfortable eating at this restaurant.

Another small thing is their posted hours seem to be in eastern-time, even though Remington is technically on central-time (cell phones will be on central time). Plan ahead if you are wanting to come in near closing time.

The food is absolutely wonderful, the service is top notch, and the atmosphere is impeccable, but the cost is kind of pricey; especially with the way the economy is right now. I still manage to save a little money to go there every once in a while though, because I can’t resist their amazing selection of homemade food items. They all look delicious! It is definitely one of the best places I’ve been to in a long time! When anyone out there has a chance, please take the time to stop by and see what you think. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.
