Fine friendly service. We enjoyed a delightful time together with friends.
When I arrived, there was only one other person dining there. The owner and three other people were sitting at a table close to mine. I had hopes of a quiet, enjoyable meal but, after listening to the owner and the others sitting with her seriously complain (!) about how busy they had been on a different weekend, I was ready to leave. As an owner of a business, one simply does not complain about being in business and one shouldn’t be gossiping about people (especially by name) when customers are present. At that point, I was ready to leave, but I had ordered my meal and would not walk out.
After I had finished my meal and was about ready to leave, two customers came in and bought a pie, which did look delicious in the bakery case.
After they left, one of the men sitting with the owner took off his hat and scratched his dirty hair. He followed that by reaching down and scratching between his legs and his backside. He then proceeded to go to the cake case and put his bare fingers on a cake plate, swiping his fingers around to gather any spare frosting or crumbs and licking them off his fingers. He did this a second time. This with the same hand that he had scratched himself with! No gloves. No washing his hands first. Nothing.
I said to the owner “Aren’t you going to stop him?” Her reply was “He works here.” I said “Then he should know better than to do what he’s doing. That’s against food regulations.” She looked at me and rolled her eyes. I couldn’t believe it. I got up to leave and, as I was leaving, I told her that I have family and friends in the food business and they would fire anyone who did what this man did. Her reply was “You have a good afternoon and I hope you never come back.” I told her “You don’t have to worry about that. I won’t ever come back. I do have to wonder, though, if his behavior was okay with you in front of customers, what exactly is allowed to go on in the kitchen where customers can’t see what goes on?” She turned her back and went towards the kitchen.
I hate to write a bad review. I don’t remember ever having written a negative review. If a dining experience is a negative one, I just don’t go back to that establishment. When it comes to poor food handling and a lack of an ability to follow simple food handling laws/regulations, though, and an owner/proprietor defending that person’s actions, people have a right to know. Someone who would do this probably does not wash his hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, either. Gross!
My husband and I are very good tippers and, from both of us being involved in restaurant work years ago, we understand that there can be extenuating circumstances. If a server’s attitude leaves something to be desired, we figure that they might be having a really bad day, etc. We also would never allow a kitchen issue to effect a server’s tip. That’s not the server’s fault.
However, there was and is NO excuse for this man’s lack of simple, basic food hygiene or the owner’s lack of correction. This owner doesn’t have to be concerned that I would ever step foot in her bakery/cafe again. Believe me, I will not make that mistake again.
Eat here at your own risk.
Note: I gave one star because the food was okay ~ nothing to “write home about”, but okay.
