The Green Olive
The Green Olive Mediterranean restaurant review in West Des Moines
Reviews
The garlic fries were crispy but could have had a bit more flavor, while the spicy potatoes were absolutely delicious. I also highly recommend getting their garlic sauce and cilantro sauce on the side—they pair well with almost everything on the menu and tasted really good.
I went there with my husband and 2 friends. It wasn’t too crowded, but we did have to wait about 30 minutes before being served. Other than that, the staff were friendly and the service was good. I would definitely come back again
It’s a cozy, hidden gem with personalized service. I have been wanting to go for some time. It’s conveniently located inside a shopping Center. It’s not always easy to see.
it’s near the Hy-vee right by the Planet Fitness in West Des Moines.
It’s also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. The parking is easy and plentiful. The restaurant was clean.
Everything was authentic, scratch-made dishes like kabobs, wraps, and hummus, they make their own Pita bread too! Its spacious, lots of tables and was very casual when I was there for lunch and I observed a very family-friendly atmosphere.
The service was fast and efficient and they and they special packed it exactly how I wanted it. A Latina woman of a certain age was the server manager (oeand she just went out of her way to make sure I got everything the way I wanted. She made great suggestions on packing because I told her I was probably gonna take some home so she separated things out for me like I wanted. I’d heard that the portions were huge and they certainly were.
I got the #10 Gyros Mix which included a generous portion of gyros
(Tender strips of lamb and ground steak gyro,) a skewer of U.S.D.A. Choice steak kabob,
, a chicken Kabob, which i would call their version of Chicken Souvlaki (which means “little skewers” and refers to small, marinated, grilled pieces of chicken often served on skewers at traditional Greek restaurants)
each platter also includes fresh made hummus with olive oil, *Mediterranean seasoned yellow rice, and a small salad topped with our house garlic lemon dressing, homemade pita bread and a green jalapeno sauce. Which was an interesting twist to Greek food. Usually its just Greek sauce is Tzatziki (pronounced “tsah-dzee-kee”), a cool, creamy dip or sauce made from strained yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and herbs like dill or mint,
I asked for it to be packed to go even though I was eating in too. and she did an outstanding job of separating the cold salad and hummus from the rice and hot entries.
The food was good and solid hot and delicious and the portions were really generous.
They also included the traditional sweet white onions with the gyros
Its a hidden gem and a wonderful quality restaurant. I will be back.
Its owned by Silvestre and Veronica Duran — who moved to DSM from California about six years ago to be closer to family. They certainly imbued the restaurant with quality food , generous portions in great staff service and attention.
Green Olive absolutely delivered a meal that felt like comfort food and a special treat at the same time. I ordered the combo meal, and it was the kind of plate that makes you slow down and enjoy every bite because there is so much flavor and variety.
The chicken was tender and well-seasoned, with that perfect balance of warm spices that tastes rich without being too heavy. The beef had a deep, savory flavor and a satisfying bite, and the lamb was the real standout. It tasted clean, bold, and cooked just right, with that hearty, slightly smoky taste that makes lamb worth ordering. Every protein on the plate felt like it was prepared with care, not rushed.
The rice was fresh and fluffy, and it did exactly what great rice should do. It held the meal together and soaked up the flavor from everything around it. Then came the best part, the variety of sauces. Each sauce brought something different. One added a creamy smooth finish, another gave a bright kick, and another brought that deeper, bold flavor that keeps you coming back for one more bite. I loved being able to mix and match because it made the meal feel like several meals in one.
To finish, I had the cheesecake and coffee, and that was the perfect ending. The cheesecake was smooth, rich, and satisfying without being overly sweet. The coffee was warm, strong, and comforting, and it tied everything together like a great closing note.
Bottom line: Green Olive gave me a full, flavorful, and well-balanced experience from the first bite to the last sip. If you want a meal that is filling, fresh, and packed with variety, the combo meal is the way to go.
The staff were friendly and kind absolutely OUTSTANDING!!!
This new location has plenty of seating and is a nice place to eat in.
