I was a little worried when I booked a room at an inn way off-season on the Cape, thinking that a good dinner might be hard to come by, but I was mistaken.
The Glass Onion in Falmouth had a host of great reviews, and I am happy to add another. It did not disappoint.
A snowy Tuesday night (remember off-season), and one would expect that I would be dining nearly alone, but the locals and perhaps visitors (though I cannot imagine who else would be out here at the end of January) were out and enjoying the well-lit atmosphere. Always a good sign.
The people working the front were total pros. They were easy-going but knew how to run the room. I watched my waiter navigate a potentially tricky patron with grace. They were attentive enough but not over-the-top, and friendly (bonus).
I started with the seasonal spinach salad and a bottle of Paul Buisse Touraine Sauvignon Blanc. They have it by the glass, but it is so lovely that you should just get the bottle and bring it home.
The shaved cheddar on the salad was a surprisingly nice touch, complemented by the thin-sliced pears. The dressing had a master’s subtlety.
I followed the salad with the halibut over couscous with broccoliini. The broccoli was nicely done. I cook mine with a little balsamic vinegar, a little white vinegar, and lemon, but I didn’t miss it. It had a bit of a crunch (perfect), and the wine/butter sauce over the couscous was delightful.
Halibut is not a hard fish to cook, but it is hard to get it JUST right. The folks in the back room nailed it.
Texture, softness, not dry, almost a crust on the outside. They were paying attention.
Is it the least expensive plate in town? Nope. But, in my opinion, totally worth it.
Would I go again? Yes. If I were out here in the summer, I would undoubtedly need a reservation.
P.S. I overheard the owner talking about a md winter break. If you brave the cold and snow, make sure you call to confirm they are open.
They open at 5p sharp. We were welcomed and seated promptly. Our waiter was at our table in the perfect amount of time to bring water and take our drink order. The drinks fun and bright kicked off our dining experience with excitement.
Moments later, some beautiful, warm bread with spreadable and well presented butter adorned our table.
We ordered the Lobster Pastry appetizer. It was decadent and delicious, not to mention incredibly beautiful. We would have licked the plate if nobody was looking… 😉
Between servings, bus staff quickly and discretely cleared and replaced dirty plates and silver. We felt pampered, as if we were the most important customers in the world.
Dinner came and it was everything we had hoped for. The duck, cooked medium rare, with skin, and a cherry sauce, was delicious. The fresh green beans and Yukon gold potatoes, the perfect complements. The striped bass, also, flaky, tender, and wonderful. Perched on top of arugula and a light lemony tomato dressing made the dish really pop. The recommended red and white wines paired perfectly.
Then came dessert. This brownie thing from another universe. Leaning into a pool of melted chocolate, topped with whipped cream and mint, a luxurious confection that left quite the impression and is in a sugar coma.
We left, mesmerized by our experience and wanting to go back. Hands down one of the best most delicious, elegant, and white glove dining experiences we have had out (and there are a lot). Highly recommended. Don’t hesitate.
The atmosphere is elegant yet comfortable and inviting. This was our second visit and I followed our fantastic server (Jeremy’s) recommendation. I had the Lobster Strudel appatizer (specialty) and it was amazing followed by The Bisro Steak which was so tender and delicious. For dessert, we wanted something light and went with the house made mint chocolate chip ice cream which was so light and refreshing, we actually ordered a pint to bring home.
The other owner (Josh) delivered our salad course, he was friendly and fun asked if we were celebrating anything special and to let him know if there was anything he could do for us.
If this place is on your list, do it. You will become a regular.
The service the night we went was efficient if a little combative. If there is one reprimand to be made it would be to train some of the staff on how to respond if one has doubts after tasting a bottle of wine. If it feels corked and one expresses doubts about it, not sure saying the restaurant has been serving that particular wine for nine years was the right response. It ended up the wine just needed to breathe but the waiter’s reply changed the mood.
We always enjoy it and always feel it was worth the money which for Falmouth is on the high end.
I have never eaten anything at Glass Onion that I didn’t love. The salad is so fresh and always made with local ingredients, soups are so flavorful and all of their dishes are carefully curated and executed. We love their cocktail and wine lists too – excellent selections.
Highly recommend if you’re in the area!!
The menu for the food is small, but the wine menu is much bigger. We ordered some cocktails, and 2 appetizers to share. The cocktails all had strong colors, especially the Rub-a-dub-dub, almost unhealthy color (LOL) but with an adorable little ducky on it! The server told us that we are welcome to take the ducky with us if we wanted to keep it. The flavors of the cocktails are a-ok, not the best I’ve had.
The server told us all the specials of the night, and we ordered one of the appetizer special, which was a duck leg with noodles. It was so delicious! The meat was tender and packed with flavor, and the noodles had Asian noodle flavor which we all loved. The second appetizer was a lobster strudel, which sounded interesting. It had super crunchy phyllo exterior and moist lobster meat in the inside. Slightly heavy on the salt but otherwise, tasted really nice.
For the main, we ordered Seafood Risotto, Seared Scallops, and Wester Ross Salmon. They were presented elegantly on the plate, good quality and nice flavors.
Then we decided to get a couple of desserts to share. We ordered one of the special of the night, whiskey chocolate cake with whipped cream and chocolate mousse. It was rich and chocolate-y, delicious! The other dessert was Creme Brulee, a classic. It was a nice size for us to share, creamy and very tasty!
The server was really nice, polite, friendly, and we were taken care of throughout the evening. A nice little restaurant with upscale atmosphere and dishes.
