My mom taught me about wine. “I don’t care whether you spend a dollar or a thousand on a bottle, it’s about what you like. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” Number 2, “Find a wine store and someone who will work with you and learn your tastes over time.” What is so nice about the French Paradox is that they have a full range of wines to satisfy your palate and respect your budget. If you want a beast of a Bourdeaux, or a really nice Zinfandel from California that won’t break your budget, they have these and the range in between; the wine tastings are very well curated and showcase this. Most recently I tried the Harvey & Harriet Red Blend from Paso Robles and a week later I’m still trying to figure it out. I would not have known about this without stopping in for one of their tastings, and if I read about it I probably would have passed it over.

When I’m invited to dinner and I want to bring a really nice bottle of wine Matt and Ian have never failed to impress my hosts. “What are they serving?” “This isn’t something you’d normally buy but it will go really with…” The store also has a really interesting assortment of spirits, fresh bread, cheeses, and pastries. Gem of a store, highly recommended.

Nice clean shop. Knowledgeable staff guided me through wines from France, Italy, and Spain. Good local fresh bread and cheese selection. Liquor too!

Great wines! Great prices! Amazing help choosing the perfect wine…. my daughter said the owners felt more like friends than a salesperson!

Update 11/19/18 – they supplied all the alcohol for our 150 person party. Our guests loved the quality and variety of the bottles Peter chose for our party. He even let us return unopened bottles after the party ended. Truly appreciated!

The French Paradox Wines is absolutely a no brainer for anyone looking for a great wine selection! The owner Peter has made 2 recommendations for me and my wife based on our taste and both bottles were exactly what we were looking for. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and will make you feel like family. They also offer cheese and meats and can help you pair those with your bottle of wine! If you’ve never been to this store you should definitely stop in next time you are looking for a bottle of wine!

I went in right before Thanksgiving for three Italian wines that I can’t usually find many places hoping to find maybe one. I was delightfully surprised to find all three, and got some help at checkout to order another wine to come in for Christmas. Very knowledgeable, kind and cheerful people. Looking forward to going back for my Christmas wines.

I googled wine tastings near me and went The French Paradox Wines. I entered the establishment and thought it was a very quaint and beautiful place, floor to ceiling wine selections, liquor, bread, cheese and other accoutrements. I walked to the back where the wine tasting was being conducted. The guy doing the tasting asked did I need help and I said I was here for the tasting. He put a glass in front of me a told me what region the wine was from and that was it. I guess he was over it for the day seemingly annoyed at my presence. I finished the tasting in a very short amount of time. The ambience was nice but the person doing the wine tasting was not welcoming or informative at least not to me.

I sold fiine wine as an importer/distributor for 25 years. I love wine and so do the father and son team of Peter and Matt Wood at the French Paradox.

Their well-stocked shelves hold a handpicked collection of treats that changes all the time. And not just wines from small producers, but many exotic spirits, beers, ciders, and mixing ingredients if all descriptions as well.

It’s easy to find a bunch of tasty, special, and moderately priced selections no matter what you are looking for. Ask them about any of their producers – they really know their stuff.

This was an amazing find. We were visiting our son in D.C., and decided to drive through the Maryland “thoroughbred horse” region. We needed to pick up a nice wine for our dinner, and so Googled to see if there was a wine store in the area. We saw the reviews of this place, but were skeptical because it wasn’t in an urban area (admittedly, we’re city-snobs). We were amazed when we walked in. Everywhere were absolutely top-flight wines of the sort you’d expect to fine only in D.C., N.Y., L.A. or S.F. And, perhaps best of all, the prices were remarkable. We live just a couple of miles away from the retail outlet in the Bay Area for Kermit Lynch, probably the U.S.’s most toney importer. The French Paradox carried lots of his wines; I jotted down some of the wines and the prices. Returning to the Bay Area, I walked into Kermit’s store and discovered that the French Paradox sold most of their Kermit Lynch wines at a 10% discount or more. Maybe Maryland’s taxes are lower than California’s—whatever the reason, it was a very pleasant experience buying here, as well as shopping. Central Maryland is lucky to have them.

Great selection of fine wines and spirits. They also have a nice selection of gormet snacks. Certainly one of the best baguettes in B’more.
