Reviews
Space is tight — a few window seats and several small tables towards the back — and the narrow staircase leading up to the intimate first-floor dining room adds to the cozy, almost Parisian feel.
The room itself is warmly decorated, with red walls, black-and-white photos from the past, and white tablecloths on tables set close together. There’s also a small bar at the far end and light streaming in from the windows on the right.
Despite not booking, we were lucky to get a table; the room was nearly full (about 80% occupied, with just eight tables in total).
I started with the Irish rock oysters with mignonette (£4.50 each). These were a little underwhelming — small in size, with average flavour and one noticeably meagre in meat.
The calves’ brain with capers and brown butter sauce, however, was outstanding. Delicately cooked, it had the lightness of white fish like cod but with a firmer texture. The sauce carried a lovely hint of vanilla, and the accompanying sourdough bread was perfect for soaking it up. A real highlight — and very reasonably priced.
Service was warm, personable, and efficient. We were in and out within an hour, feeling very satisfied.
Overall, The French House offers a distinctive dining experience — interesting, well-executed food served in a wonderfully atmospheric setting.A Soho gem worth visiting, especially for those who enjoy something a bit different.
This historical, one-room restaurant offers up delicious French fare and fantastic wines in a charming setting.
The chalk board menu of specials, friendly staff and inviting atmosphere make this a worthwhile endeavor.
We enjoyed fresh oysters, a delicious sourdough bread with sea salt encrusted butter, seasonal British asparagus in a savory Hollandaise, an 8oz rump steak and some of the best crispy chips I’ve had in a long time.
This restaurant continues to deliver and with good reason.
Some classics never go out of style!
The French House is one of them.
P.S Don’t forget to order the warm, homemade madeleines!!
Service sublime, half pints downstairs to finish, just go there!
Unfortunately, when we arrived 20 minutes ahead of time, they had just given our table away to two other people who hadn’t booked. These people were then moved to seats at the bar and while quite a fuss was made over them, we were seated quietly and efficiently. No real apology made and we felt that the embarrassment and inconvenience was ours, not theirs.
Then there was the noise level. It is a very small upstairs restaurant with tables quite close together. There now seems to be quite the trend of broadcasting conversations at the top of your voice, and this being a small room, these conversations resonate extremely well. Obviously this is not within the control of the staff, but we were unable to hear our own, quieter conversation over the other tables, who we could hear very clearly.
On that note, we will not be visiting again and honestly couldn’t recommend.
For me, it was not simply about drinking, but about being in a space that encourages good company and good mood. I left with the sense that The French House is a pub you remember not just for what you had, but for how it made you feel.
