Came here and when I say flavorful. The food is definitely flavorful.
The Mango Sticky Wings are way beyond delicious. The sweets are delicious knock your teeth out sweet but definitely worth trying for sure. The customer service was amazing so no complaints there. Small little hole in the wall and the food as stated is definitely worth it.

Just picked up our first order. We were hungry and I wanted to dine-in at an Indian restaurant in the area and so we goggle searched and decided on Essence. When we pulled up and found out it was a take-out spot instead of a dine-in we left and that made me upset because I really wanted to eat there cuz the food in the pictures online looked so good and the prices were very reasonable! So, after sitting in the car looking for other Indian places in the area we decided to just order from here and wait the 30 minutes (better than driving around for God knows how long and waiting 45 after ordering) and ya’ll?, it was worth the entire wait!

When I tell you the food was AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS I mean that…the aroma is intoxicating, the spice level is on point as well cuz I ordered the mild sag shrimp curry and it was just the right spice level for my pallet. The scent is still on my fingers. So after we got our order we pulled over across the street to eat cuz we were getting hangry and we couldn’t make it home with the scent of this food in the car. We took a few bites and we were in bliss! Hubby got the whole fish dish and we both got a slice of cake (chocolate and carrot) and it was DIVINE!! like who is cooking in there?! Somebody grandmas grandma back there cooking with the ancestors! Listen! Look no further please go get your favorite dish from them! The naan! Oh my gosh…we are definitely coming back and it’s far from home I’ll take that drive! Thank you to the staff, you all were amazing! 5 stars, 5 thumbs up!

Made an order on Ubereats. The food was very fresh, plated beautifully. Flavors so spicy and delicious. The reviews brought me there, plus I needed something on the healthier side. Veggies freshly chopped, rice fluffy and delicious. I will order again.

If you love South Indian(Kerala) style food this is one of the best place in DMV area !!
I ordered Egg Puffs and Beef Kizhi Poratta from their Sunday Special menu and they were absolutely delightful! The pastry was perfectly flaky and golden brown, while the filling was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of seasoning. Each bite was a delicious blend of textures, and they were served warm.
Beef Kizhi Poratta ,it was a standout dish. The beef was incredibly tender and packed with flavorful spices that created a delicious depth. Wrapped in a perfectly flaky poratta, the bread had a nice crispiness on the outside while remaining soft inside. enhancing the overall experience. The portion size was generous, making them a great value for the price. I can’t recommend these enough—definitely a must-try for any South Indian food lover! 5 stars! I can’t wait to return for another delicious meal.

Had a wonderful Onasadya(traditional Kerala meal) delivered to us in Ashburn this past weekend. Everything was scrumptious and wonderfully packed. Would highly recommend and looking forward to visiting the restaurant soon. Can’t wait for more yummy dishes!

Delicious! Been in search for kerala food in DC area and this place is a gem.

Update: one star is reduced with the latest take out. Beef was all fat, but still tasted great. I hope the quality dosen’t decline over time

I ordered about 5–7 different dishes from The Essence by JohnNair, and I have to say this was by far the worst Indian food I’ve ever had. I’m truly shocked by the 4.9-star rating, because based on flavor alone, I’d give it a 1 out of 5.

I’ve been to many Indian restaurants over the years, and I know what to expect: rich, bold, spicy, and flavorful food. This just wasn’t it.

As a family of 6, we order big and love to try a wide variety of dishes. But this time, everyone in the family agreed the food was bland, lacked depth, and did not taste authentic.

I can’t help but wonder if it has something to do with the area it’s located in. Based on my experience dining across DC, Virginia, Montgomery County, and Baltimore, I’ve noticed that the best Indian spots are usually in areas where there’s a strong Indian or international foodie population. If you Google Indian food near this location, you’ll see the closest well-known options are in VA or DC this restaurant is one of the only ones in its local area.

While I understand that people in certain areas may not be as familiar with traditional Indian cuisine, as a true foodie who ventures out for authentic flavor, I expected more. The lack of authenticity, spice, and richness makes this a hard pass for me.

If you’re looking for true Indian flavor, you may want to head into DC, VA, or Montgomery County instead. Unfortunately, The Essence missed the mark.

The staff are so knowledgeable and kind. They are very accommodating for vegetarians! The naan is light and fluffy & flavorful. The samosas are a new favorite of mine. I also had a Saag Paneer from here and it was pretty good! My friend loved their butter chicken, so we’ve been back twice in the same week. Mango Lassi’s were the perfect drink to quell the spice. Portions are generous, food is piping hot & everyone had on their PPE. I’ll be back soon!
