Food: …
The welcome was friendly enough. A waitress told us to sit anywhere we’d like. That warm welcome chilled considerably, however, when I mentioned there were nine of us. Her demeanor instantly shifted. Her solution was to split our family across separate tables, an idea we weren’t keen on. Wanting to eat together, we gently pushed a smaller table next to a larger one—a simple, logical move. You would have thought we’d redesigned her entire establishment. With a sigh, she informed us this would make her job “harder to serve.”
Things only got stranger from there. As she took our drink orders, which came out promptly, the real performance began. Taking the first food order, she paused to complain that she was going to run out of tickets. She moved to the next person and repeated her grievance. And then again. All I could think was, “Why are you telling us this? Just get a new ticket book when you run out!” This bizarre, running commentary on her dwindling paper supply continued halfway around our table until, at last, the prophecy was fulfilled. She ran out of tickets and finally went to get a new book.
After the ordeal of placing our orders was complete, she walked away from the table with a parting shot: “It’s going to be a while.”
Having worked in the service industry, I know that things go wrong and bad days happen. But you keep that frustration in the kitchen; you don’t broadcast it to your customers.
When the food eventually started to trickle out from the kitchen, some of it actually looked good. But looks can be deceiving. Several plates were dry and unappetizing. My wife’s meal was barely warm. Most of the toast and all of the bacon that came with our orders were burnt.
We left not angry, but laughing at how thoroughly and consistently awful the entire experience was. Would I go back? Not if it were the last restaurant in Paonia. I would happily make the 13-mile drive to Hotchkiss, where we later found the service and food to be amazing. My advice is to do the same.
Whilst it would’ve been better if they’d had more staff on and planned for it, she did seriously well with the amount of people pouring in. Food was what you pay for, diner esq, nothing fancy but fine. Few bad reviews here are probably expecting miracles but after all it’s a diner, and it was fine considering that. Cheers
