Felicia Dortch-Greer’s Review: The Daily Grind Coffee and Ice Cream Shop (Dyer, IN)

Nestled on Calumet Avenue, The Daily Grind Coffee and Ice Cream Shop has quickly become one of Dyer’s most charming spots for coffee lovers and casual weekend wanderers alike. With a solid ~4.4★ local rating, this locally owned café has crafted an inviting and approachable experience that resonates with both longtime residents and visitors from nearby communities.

Ambiance & First Impressions
The moment you step inside, there’s a palpable sense of warmth — not just from the steaming cups on the counter, but from the genuine hospitality that seems woven into the space. The décor balances cozy café comfort with a subtle retro diner vibe, making it a welcoming place to meet a friend, catch up on work, or simply savor a quiet moment. Outdoor seating expands the appeal, especially on crisp mornings or balmy Indiana evenings.

Coffee & Culinary Offerings
The coffee here is reliably well-crafted. Guests often praise the lattes, cold brews, and specialty iced drinks, noting that baristas take care with both classic brews and more adventurous flavored options. One standout recommendation I personally echo is their Iced Cinnamon Vanilla Latte with Cinnamon Cold Foam — balanced and comforting without being cloying.

Beyond espresso, The Daily Grind pairs its drinks with laid-back favorites like affogatos and flavored coffees. While the size options lean toward the familiar small and large, their attention to detail — like layering effects achieved by cold foam — shows a level of craft that sets it apart from standard chain experiences.

Service & Community Feel
Staff are frequently singled out in customer reviews for their patience, friendliness, and personal touch — qualities that elevate what could otherwise be a routine stop into something memorable. Several visitors go out of their way to mention interactions with named baristas, which is a strong sign of a coffee shop that feels personal rather than transactional.

Value & Atmosphere
Though not the cheapest cup in town, the pricing is consistent with other independent cafés and justified by quality, presentation, and ambience. Customers consistently highlight the relaxed, unhurried vibe — a welcome alternative to busier or more corporate cafes

Final Thoughts
The Daily Grind earns its place as a local favorite by delivering more than coffee: it fosters connection, community, and a small-town sense of heart. Whether you’re a regular seeking your morning ritual or a visitor looking for a thoughtful cup and a welcome atmosphere, this Dyer gem is worth putting on your list.

LOVE this place so much! I’ve had multiple latte’s and cold brews from here and they’ve all been amazing! I can’t speak highly enough about this place and it’s always my first choice for a good quality coffee or latte! Oh and they have an awesome room for meetings that I can’t wait to use in the future!

I’ve been excited for this place to open! I went in today to try an iced coffee with cold foam and was very happy with the drink and friendly service. They were very patient as I was indecisive lol it was a tough choice between the coffee or a matcha with homemade strawberry cold foam! Will definitely be back to try some other drinks + ice cream!

Drinks are on the pricier side and the default sizes are small or large, but pretty much on par with other small biz coffee shops. (Some other review complained about their drink not being mixed, but it’s to create an ombré effect which I loved, just mix after or ask them to).

**Update: I went back for the iced strawberry matcha and it was delicious!

This coffee shop is absolutely amazing! The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and just the perfect spot to relax or catch up with friends. The owners Hope and Jerry and staff are so friendly and welcoming — you can tell they truly care about their customers. I’ve tried so many different drinks here, and every single one has been incredible! My husband and son love this place just as much as I do — it’s definitely become our go-to coffee spot. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out!

I stopped in here to grab a quick coffee after an appointment this morning. It’s a cozy little cafe tucked in the back corner of a new building that also houses a Great American Bagel. I wound up getting a cookie butter iced latte, which was incredible!
There are a bunch of great new businesses in and near Dyer-don’t overlook this one! The staff is wonderful and the coffee is great! I can’t wait to go back.

The brown sugar shaken espresso was good, the chai lattes were mediocre “it tastes watered down.” The matcha was strong and “tastes grassy”, we also ordered two red bull kickers for $8 each which in my opinion was a little over priced but tasted good. They brought a chocolate muffin instead of chocolate chip muffin and then messed up two of our drinks. The first drink they forgot the cold foam, took it back and brought it with cold foam. The other drink they made it entirely wrong, with pumpkin and cold foam when neither was ordered. The atmosphere was nice, a cute and aesthetic place for sure. I think there is room for improvement, but first impressions weren’t good.

Some of the drinks were also chunky and not mixed well.

i had high hopes for this place, after finding out it was open i was very eager to try this place. i went there and when i looked over the menu i decided to try the redbull drinks, which clearly was a mistake. i paid $8 for a small redbull drink which wasnt even mixed. the syrups were added to the bottom of the cup and then ice and then the redbull was just poured on top. i was shocked to see the size, which they don’t even list on their menu which would be helpful so people could know what they’re paying for. why would i pay $8 for this small drink when i could go some place like 7brew or scooters and get a larger 30 oz redbull drink for the same price. staff don’t even try to have a conversation with you… this place has a lot to learn
