The atmosphere is always great! Seeing both the familiar faces as well as the new. Everyone enjoying good soulfood from a locally owned and operated establishment.

I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing this restaurant is. I wanted a warm, cozy, made-with-love meal for my staff to cap off a history tour in Durham. I reached out to The Chicken Hut and worked with Miss Ruth in creating a lunch time experience they will not soon forget. As a family business owner, I always look for family businesses and let me tell this is one. And the Chicken Hut team is anchored to its community; they know patrons by name and order. For our staff lunch, we ordered catering for 25 and I swear it would have fed 40. We ordered mac and cheese, baked chicken, bbq chicken, rolls, salad, green beans and apple cobbler. When I went to pick up, I added some fried chicken that Colonel Sanders only dreams of. It was incredible. Be forewarned that at lunch, this place is super busy so you might have a little wait, but it is worth it without a doubt. There are simply not restaurants like this anymore. Genuine, honest, from the heart cooking that transcends trends and Instagram posts. If you are in Durham, you MUST stop here for lunch. Incredible service, incredible food, incredible value and incredible heart.

I love the old fashion atmosphere. The food is seasoned with love. I watched the staff that knew customers by name, while answering new customer question with compassion. Yes, the food is fantastic! And you will get plenty.

I heard about The Chicken Hut on the news during this past summer. Since I have to come to Duke hospital we decided to give it a try. It was the best decision we ever made. The food is fantastic. The fried chicken is excellent. We have not been disappointed anytime we dine there. Everything is perfect the desserts are outstanding. The Chicken Hut is our go to restaurant every time we are in Durham. I love it and everyone is very friendly and helpful.

Wow! This Spot is like that. It is a nice vibe to catch while waiting for hot fresh fried chicken. This is my first time trying this place out and it was a pleasure to be served by the owner. He walked me right through my experience. I waited about 12 mins for my food. As I waited it was so relaxing. I felt so honored. Way to Go ! I wish you all many more to come.

The Chicken Hut, established in 1957, is a historically Black-owned family restaurant in Durham. It’s known for its soul food, in particular, the fried chicken. Originally named The Chicken Box, it was on Apex Highway, but moved to its current location on Fayetteville Street in the late 1960s. Now in its third generation, the restaurant is a community staple. It recently received a $50,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I read an article about it and decided to try it today. I am from Durham … lived here all my life, and I’m sorry to say … I had never been to The Chicken Hut, until today. It’s in an old building with a driveway that leads to a parking lot on the side and back of the building. They are only open from 11:30-2:00. At 11:30, there was a long line stretching around the building. You stand in line to order. You order at the cafeteria style counter. You may eat there or take your order to go. I chose to eat there. There’s a tv on the wall playing old soul music videos. While I was there, I enjoyed The Temptations and Barry White. I ordered fried chicken, two wings and a leg (they don’t offer a breast). My two sides were collards and cabbage. Your meal comes with lemonade or sweet tea. No other choices. Everything was delicious. It was all seasoned perfectly. It’s extremely loud in there, too loud, and that’s my only complaint. I should have tried this eatery years ago.

First visit, forgot it was cash only. Went on a journey looking for my bank’s drive up atm.

Returned and the fried chicken was sold out. But the owner said there was a long line for the fried chicken hours ago when it opened. On the buffet line were baked thighs and drumsticks in gravy, fried gizzards or beef tips. The baked spaghetti looked good but not enough left for a serving. I selected beef tips and the pieces are large, similar to stew meat. The gravy is very good. The rice does not come with the tips so it became one of my sides. My 2nd side was macaroni and cheese. I was fooled because they finished it in the oven to brown the top but it’s my least favorite style due to the cheese sauce. Yet very traditional in NC restaurants. It also came with a small toll and a choice of drinks. I chose the punch, cherry kool-aid in a 8-10 ounce cup. I also wanted to try the collard greens. They were just ok for me, prepared conservatively without meats, onions, garlic or vinegar. I don’t mind stems but if you do, they come with them.

There were nice size cake slices for dessert. Plus the option to order fried shrimp or fish from the kitchen.

I do recommend trimming the large hedges in front of the restaurant especially at the edge of the lawn. It obstructs the view when trying to pull out of the narrow driveway. When I came back from the bank, there was a van already in the driveway who didn’t see that I was already proceeding to turn in and vice versa. A large mirror for the driveway could help as well.

There was plenty of parking available between 1-2pm.

The food was prepared a little different. I ordered the smothered pork chop. The sauce it was smothered in was okay but not great. Great service and hospitality though. I would recommend.

Some of the nicest people I have ever met! I appreciated their kindness and hospitality. I had come from Washington State for vacation and saw online that the Chicken Hut was the best place to get fried chicken. That was no lie! Cooked fresh with homemade sides and a cup of grape Kool aid. Yummy comfort food at it’s finest and great people. Thank you!

Wanted some soul food, looked it up and The Chicken Hut was one that popped up. I was sceptical because of the parking situation. Went inside and found out I needed cash, no cards accepted. My 90’s music was playing and the man behind the counter dishing out the food was very polite and friendly. He takes care of each customer personally. I got the fried chicken plate, wings (white and dark plates are available), with 2 sides, Mac & cheese, greens, hush puppies and an extra 2 sides, yams and cabbage. I got mine to go so when I got home and started eating,,,, it was great!! Everything already seasoned. I spent about $28 for all this and it’s well worth the money. I will be going back soon. The only one thing I didn’t like is their hours of operation They need to stay open later or reopen for dinner
