The food we had was fantastic! The scotch egg starter was a delight, as were the scallops. Our steaks were beautifully cooked and the sauces we added were lovely. We also had the carrot cake cheesecake and the chocolate tart for dessert, both were excellent. The cheesecake is not as you would expect it to be. It is deconstructed and a softer texture than you would usually have but my husband said it tasted lovely and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was great throughout. We visited on a Saturday and hadn’t booked but ate late afternoon and so we were able to get a table for food but if going at busy times you have to book in advance as it is very popular. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be returning in the future.
Would be 5 starts IF:
– Beer that I requested on tap said “unavailable” so to have saved asking.
– Roast dinners matched the menu online. Porchetta was missing and replaced by chicken. Bread sauce was unique and incredible – add more in each roast please!! Ha.
– table was booked smartly. Booked with a 1 year old, and out at the table right next to the open front door, not sure why we weren’t put further inside.
– servings were timed better. A family arrived 10-15 mins after us and were served 20 minutes before us.
To secure a table at a decent time, we booked a few days in advance via their website, which required card details to confirm the reservation. This is likely due to the restaurant’s popularity, as it was packed during our visit.
The pub is located on an extremely narrow residential street, which made parking challenging. The small car park behind the pub was full, and with limited space to maneuver, turning around in our larger car was tricky. We ended up parking on the street outside someone’s house, which felt a bit uncomfortable as most front doors open almost directly onto the road. The parking situation was certainly unusual and a bit stressful.
Inside, the atmosphere was cozy and inviting, though not particularly modern.
The dining area was bustling, which contributed to a significant downside: the noise level. With so many people in a compact space, the sound was overwhelming, making it difficult to hold a conversation with my partner. The background music from a speaker only added to the sensory overload, which was a shame.
We ordered the roast platter to share, priced at £60, which felt like good value for the generous portion and variety of trimmings included. The food was nicely presented, and I particularly enjoyed the cauliflower cheese. However, the meat arrived a little cold, which was disappointing for the price. Overall, the meal was decent but didn’t quite live up to its impressive appearance.
The standout of our visit was the staff. They were exceptionally polite, attentive, and efficient, providing wonderful customer service that truly enhanced our experience.
Unfortunately, despite the friendly staff and inviting atmosphere, we likely won’t return. The average food, excessive noise, and awkward parking situation outweighed the positives for us. That said, I’d like to commend the team for their outstanding service—it was a bright spot in our visit.
No reindeer were actually harmed in this sitting, the Venison on the other hand was amazing 🙂
The staff were really friendly and attentive, and though they were busy it didn’t feel rushed in any way.
I highly recommend this place
The restaurant is situated in a narrow residential road and the parking is limited, so be wary. Decor was themed as pub with some butcher references. The bar and seating area is snug with plenty of people inside, so the temperature was good. The staff outfits were like butchers with their leather like aprons – interesting!
The meals and food were excellent all accept the vegetarian options, the veggie meal ordered a little tasteless. Otherwise the service, wine and charges were definitely not cheap, Chateaubriand was £80 for two and again as mentioned the jus could have been warmer but we all agreed that we would visit again and recommend this pub….5/5
