My husband surprised me with a romantic 50th birthday dinner at The Black Pearl, and it was absolutely magical. From the moment we walked in, we felt special—the ambiance was intimate and welcoming.
Our server, Jay, was fantastic—funny, knowledgeable, and super helpful with the menu. Every dish, from hors d’oeuvres to the main course, was phenomenal. We also had the pleasure of meeting their incredibly talented sommelier, Adam. He took the time to understand what we were eating and paired our wines perfectly. We usually stick to cabernet, but Adam introduced us to pairings that complemented our meal beautifully—light, balanced, and educational!
He even poured a dessert wine with a rich backstory that made the experience even more memorable. We’ve never had a dining experience like this before. I came from Las Vegas and had never been to The Black Pearl, but I’ll be recommending it to everyone I know.
They didn’t just serve us—they celebrated with us. Truly unforgettable!
From the start, there was confusion. The server explained this was an eight-course tasting menu, but only seven courses were listed. After some back-and-forth, he realized the eighth was an unlisted chocolate dessert. A small issue, but not a great first impression.
The server strongly recommended the filet mignon as a signature dish, so I ordered it medium. When it arrived, it was clearly overcooked, dry, gray throughout, with only a thin pink center. This was medium-well at best. When I politely questioned it, the server seemed surprised and simply replied, “It is medium. That is what you ordered.”
The manager later acknowledged it was “overburnt on the outside,” but avoided addressing the internal overcooking. He offered to remake it, but I declined. At this price point, correctly cooking a filet should be fundamental, not a second attempt.
Service pacing was also inconsistent. A table seated after us finished dessert while we were still waiting for our entrée. To cap it off, the server also forgot to return my hat from coat check until I reminded him, a small detail, but consistent with the overall inattentiveness.
As compensation, I received a $25 gift card, not particularly useful as a traveler who won’t return.
Overall, between the menu confusion, pacing issues, overcooked entrée, and dismissive response to feedback, this did not meet fine dining standards.
The Black Pearl is a highly curated, high-end dining experience that absolutely stands out in the Dunedin/Clearwater area. From start to finish, the food was excellent, thoughtful, flavorful, and clearly executed by a chef who knows exactly what they’re doing.
The wine selection was outstanding, and every course was delicious. The plates are intentionally small, which I actually appreciated, you get to taste everything without feeling weighed down. I leaned more vegetarian for the meal but did try some of the meat dishes, and they were fantastic. Even the vegetarian options were deeply impressive, which says a lot about the kitchen.
Standouts: the lobster mac and cheese absolutely lives up to the hype, the palate cleanser was a great touch, desserts were excellent, and both the appetizers and entrées were very well executed. Overall, this meal easily outperformed other similarly priced options in the area, by a wide margin.
If I had one minor note, it would be service-related rather than food-related. The waiter’s explanations were very thorough but a bit long, and I think it would help to lead by asking whether guests are vegetarian before walking through recommendations, since most suggestions were meat-forward. Not a major issue at all, just a refinement.
The only reason this isn’t a full five stars for me is the complimentary salad, which felt a bit underwhelming compared to how strong the rest of the menu was. Everything else was excellent, so it stood out by contrast.
That said, hats off to the chef and the kitchen. If you can get a reservation, I absolutely recommend it. This place punches well above its weight and delivers a genuinely memorable dining experience.
They bring out the food in courses with a salad and palette cleanser and so it is a whole dining experience.
Each of our meal courses were brought out promptly and prepared to perfection!
The Belgian chocolate cheesecake was fabulous!
