Reviews
We went to The Bistro at Goodstone Inn for my wife’s 30th birthday — it was supposed to be the highlight of the evening and ended up being one of the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve ever had.
It wasn’t even busy — there were only four tables upstairs (about 12 guests total) and a business dinner of roughly 18 people downstairs. Despite that, the kitchen gave full priority to the downstairs party and left everyone else waiting indefinitely. We later learned the downstairs kitchen was under maintenance, and the upstairs kitchen was taking full capacity for both levels, including the large dinner group.
We ordered drinks shortly after being seated, which took over 10 minutes to arrive. We then ordered the French Onion Soup and the Squash Soup of the day. Thirty minutes later, still no food. The table next to us complained to the wait staff that they’d been waiting ninety minutes without receiving their appetizers, and what appeared to be the manager came over to apologize.
The staff tried to appear sympathetic, but the service remained inconsistent and inattentive. When I asked our waiter to come back in a few minutes so I could decide on another drink, he didn’t return for 20 minutes, and another server had to take my order. He wasn’t assisting the large party downstairs — he just wasn’t present.
The setting itself is charming, but the experience collapses once service begins. The squash soup was bland and flavorless, while the French Onion Soup was the only redeeming dish. After two hours, our entrées finally arrived — my wife’s trout (a dish that could be made at home in 15 minutes) and my burger (another 10-minute meal). Both were forgettable and nowhere near the quality expected for the price.
And those prices are outrageous: $30 for a burger, $30 for a single pour of whiskey, $18 for a cup of soup.
If the owners are reading this — it is your responsibility to know when not to take reservations if your kitchen cannot handle a full load. You also need to train your wait staff to be more attentive and transparent with guests when things are delayed. This establishment does not — and should not — represent fine dining.
You only turn 30 once, and this dinner was supposed to be special. Instead, it became a two-hour ordeal that left us frustrated, disappointed, and regretting ever choosing The Bistro at Goodstone Inn. I should have read the recent one-star reviews before booking — and now, unfortunately, I’m adding one more to that list. I will not be returning or giving this restaurant a second chance.
