Our mission is simple, to serve you the most delicious chicken and cocktails that you have ever had in a warm atmosphere of extreme southern hospitality. Who are the owners? Our story in New Braunfels started with a leap of faith. On August 4, 2015, we closed on a little-known restaurant in Gruene called The River House Tea Room. At the time, I was finishing culinary school after walking away from a 10-year career in advertising. Hospitality had always been in my blood — from working in fine dining restaurants throughout my teens and early twenties to finally deciding to chase my passion full time. Cristina and I had visited Gruene for years and had never even heard of The River House Tea Room. That intrigued me. I saw potenti…

My husband and I came in for a day date and absolutely loved the atmosphere and the food! Everything was full of flavor, and the iced jalapeño margarita was perfectly balanced! We also noticed the restaurant is dog friendly, which was so nice to see since we’ll be adding a Cavapoo to our family soon. Highly recommend this place!

Now this was a treat. Very eclectic atmosphere, very Gruene-esque if you get my meaning. Staff was exceptionally nice, our waitress extremely hospitable. And though all of that was a delight… then the food came.
I had Gruene Eggs and Ham (Eggs Benedict) but with a surprise twist. Rather than being served on English Muffins it was served on fried green tomatoes. Wow… an amazing gastronomic montage of flavor. THEN an awesome side of cheesy cheese and grits. I would order it with the eggs not so well done on the poaching next time to get a runner eggs, but that doesn’t diminish how happy I was.

It was an experience. Gruene Fried Tomatoes are a must. They have a nice list of specialty cocktails which I also enjoyed. It was a slow time but Wade provided excellent service. Love the historical area here.

Fantastic chicken joint! WOW. The deviled eggs were amazing. I tried the bacon jam chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint. Our server Michelle was great and helpful. I enjoyed my time here and we will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.

My cousin and I stopped here for brunch on our day trip to Greene. I love chicken so this was a must for me personally.

I got chicken and waffles. The meat was tender and good quality. It does have a bit of a thicker breading so if you’re not a fan of that you may not like it. The waffle is a sweeter kind, with thick sugar-like bits that I personally don’t enjoy in my waffles. I chose mac and cheese as my side because I think I’d seen that it was recommended in some reviews. I didn’t like it. It was cold when it was served to me, and it was all stuck together. I’m also pretty sure I just don’t like the white cheddar blend. I should’ve gotten the potatoes like my cousin did, they looked really good.

Important to note: we were seated outside and occasionally leaves/dirt/pollen etc. would fall from the trees and onto the table/near the food regularly. I had to protect the food from falling objects. There weren’t umbrellas at all the tables so we couldn’t have avoided that. Keep that in mind when sitting outside when you go.

I definitely want to try the zero proof mocktails when I go next and I’ll probably just get the chicken.

The atmosphere is delightful, with a fun menu. My biggest takeaway, is the menu. The offerings are so eclectic, with unique entrees. The appetizers are awesome and flavorful. What I really lived is the transparency of the menu. It details, credit card charges, wait time for perfection, how food is prepared, gluten free options and what to expect with gratitude and splitting menu items. The service was amazing. Thank you for a splendid time in my first visit.

A Sensory Scientist’s Take on The BirdHouse – Gruene, Texas

As someone trained to dissect flavor, texture, and aroma with the precision of a jeweler examining a rare gem, I don’t hand out perfect scores lightly. My professional background in sensory evaluation and chocolate tasting means I’m attuned to subtleties most guests might only register subconsciously. At The BirdHouse, just outside New Braunfels in the storybook charm of Gruene, Texas, those subtleties weren’t just present—they were celebrated.

The setting alone feels like a scene lifted from a Hallmark movie: warm lighting, rustic elegance, and a choice between a breezy outdoor patio or a cozy, inviting interior. We opted for indoors, where the atmosphere wrapped around us like a well-worn quilt.

Our meal began with truffle fries—a deceptively simple dish elevated to near-perfection. Each fry was a masterclass in contrast: a delicate, audible crispness giving way to a pillowy interior. The duck fat imparted a depth of umami and a lingering richness that harmonized beautifully with the earthy truffle notes. This wasn’t just “good fries”—this was a carefully balanced sensory experience.

For mains, we explored the breadth of their chicken offerings:

Bone-in chicken – Juicy, with fibers yielding effortlessly under the fork, carrying a savory depth that spoke to precise cooking and seasoning.

Chicken tenders – A clean, golden crust that shattered lightly, revealing moist, flavorful meat without a trace of dryness.

Chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes – Comfort food elevated, the coating crisp yet delicate, the potatoes smooth and buttery, acting as a perfect foil to the seasoned crust.

Despite the variety, a unifying thread ran through each plate: tenderness, balanced seasoning, and a richness that never tipped into heaviness. This is the hallmark of a kitchen that understands not just cooking, but the orchestration of flavor and texture.

From a sensory professional’s perspective, this was a 10 out of 10—not in the casual, hyperbolic way most diners might say it, but as a measured, deliberate conclusion. Every element, from the first bite to the last, was calibrated for pleasure.

We love coming to Gruene, TX every chance we get. My wife had wanted to go try this new mini golf they had, but unfortunately they closed early, little disappointed, but there was a restaurant we’ve never been to called The Lady Birdhouse , This place is little hidden. Our waitress Valerie was kind, and friendly. The food was delicious I recommend the chicken fried chicken .
