The Barn Steakhouse

  4.6 – 16 reviews   • Steak house

The Barn Steakhouse is a “meat-centric hideaway”, a supper club with style. Our new location is housed in an early dwelling on “The First Street” in downtown Highland Park. Hidden away down our alley-courtyard is 1898 Speakeasy and private event space. An homage to owner Amy Morton’s legendary father, restaurateur Arnie Morton (Morton’s Steakhouse), the menu boasts the finest quality ingredients available including heritage black Angus steaks. As The Barn’s menu is ever-evolving, the exact menu may be different when you dine. This eatery provides seating for up to 75 guests in its private event space, as well as outdoor seating.

Opening night at “The Barn” in Highland Park IL. This comfy delicious restaurant is a great second dinner spot new to Highland Park after the success of their location in Evanston.
The space is, I believe, in the oldest building on 1st St in Highland Park and is reminiscent of a warm inviting supper club.
The plush red chairs and great red circular booths invoke days of fine dining in the slow respectful casual times.
Upon arriving we were well greeted and escorted to our table my owner Amy Morton.
We scored one of the great curved booths
The cocktail menu is well curated, lots of cocktail options, wines by the glass and bottle.
Bread service was delicious, warm bread and soft butter sprinkled with salt.
Our French Onion soup was delicious, a key factor was it being the perfect temperature as well as balance of sweet, salty, caramelized onion rich broth and sherry.
My entree was the dry-aged bone in ribeye cooked to order with the truffle butter. The steak was excellent although I didn’t detect much truffle in the butter
My partner’s miso glazed salmon was prepared well with a side of butternut squash it was delicious.
Our side of grilled asparagus was cooked perfectly.
Our cocktails of a negroni and an old-fashioned were perfectly made and a specialty cocktail of smoked bourbon with cardamom, fig and black walnut bitters arrived in a smoked snifter was yummy.
We didn’t partake in dessert but enjoyed post dinner cocktails of sambuca and an aged port that arrived in a cool needlepoint etched cocktail glass.

Our server was wonderful combining casual chat with professional service on the menu and our meal.

The dinner was a very relaxing delicious experience
Oh and in closing we found out two great things to look forward to…
1) The Bar has $1 oysters from 4-5:30pm Monday – Friday
2) The Barn will be opening a speakeasy called 1898 in about two months. Stay tuned

In the meantime a trip to Highland Park The Barn is worth the drive.

Fortunate to snag a week one reservation at the Barn’s additional location in Amy Morton’s home turf Highland Park. There were a few minor week one issues not worth detailing and most importantly, both our server (Sharolanna?) and Morton were fully engaged in learning and adjust mode.

We started with a little gem salad – I think a different lettuce was used – that was a solid intro including bacon and anchovies. They offered to pre plate it into two portions. We also went for the generously-sized shrimp cocktail, the sauce for that was very tasty but didn’t completely overwhelm.

As mains we had a crab cake and a flat iron steak, with a side of mushrooms. We really wanted to order all the sides, they all sound delicious. The couple at the next table remarked that the mac&cheese side is fantastic. The crab cake was perfect as was the steak. I ordered medium rare and it had a lovely outside char and red center as expected. Bernaise sauce paired well as did the mushrooms, which were flavorful and simple.

The room is a little loud but that may also have been a function of the particular table. It is steakhouse sexy with exposed brick and wood paneling, including the ceiling. The bar includes a framed counter facing into the room, so it feels like there’s a bit of a scene in a good way going on there. And like the Evanston location, the bar design itself is rich and striking. We can’t wait to go in on a weeknight and grab happy hour $1 oysters along with a burger or Monday special prime rib sandwich.

A very welcome addition to Highland Park.

One of the most disappointing dinners we had in a long time. I’ll start with the positive, the restaurant is very nice inside and atmosphere is great but unfortunately the food needs a lot of work.
The French onion soup was over salted and not good. The tuna tartar was in desperate need of citrus but after the soup was decent. The teriyaki skirt steak did not have any teriyaki but what it did have was soo much soy sauce that it was so over salted that we had to send it back. The smashed potatoes on the other hand lacked butter and any seasoning at all. The Mac and cheese was dry and also not good. The branzino was actually prepared pretty well and the only good item that we ordered.
Beyond the terrible food we also had an issue with our bill, we were charged for an item that we never received because they were out of it, we were charged for the food that we sent back because it was not edible and on top of it they charged tip twice (22% service fee and an additional 22% automatic tip). The manager never came out to apologize for any of it.
I know they just recently opened but we will not be back.

Edit to add we dinned there on 3/8 at 6pm and it was a party of 13

When we walked in, we were instantly greeted by a friendly host, she was great. Ordered some apps, they were fine. Got some steaks, the Ribeye was mediocre especially for the price. Unfortunately it was not tender, and the mashed potatoes that came with all of the steaks were bland and cold. Sides were ok, Mac and cheese was just fine—meanwhile the Brussels sprouts were a 2/10 because they were swimming in sauce.
Desert was good.
Overall experience was good from the service and atmosphere side, but from the food side we were a bit disappointed. Not eager to come back.

Welcome back to Highland Park! What a treat to have Amy open the back up in her hometown! I had a seat at the bar and had a delicious meal. The center strip sirloin was grilled to perfection and paired wonderfully with a glass of Sangiovese. I look forward to the opening of the speak easy soon!

We had dinner at The Barn last week and it absolutely met — and exceeded — expectations. We’ve always loved the Evanston location, and having this new spot closer to us means we’ll be enjoying many more dinners here. The food, service and cocktails were amazing and overall a great experience.
