Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill opened in 1932 as the “Tenderloin Grill.” The restaurant claims to be the “Home of Kansas City’s Best Pork Tenderloin,” which they call “pork tenders.” It started as a food cart run by the Nabor family. Ricardo Herrera bought it in 1974 along with its secret recipe. The Herrera family ran the restaurant for nearly 50 years. Before running the restaurant full-time, Ricardo was the chief photographer at KMBC Channel 9. He balanced working at the restaurant and his TV job for nine months.
Over the years, they added items to the menu, including hamburgers, fish sandwiches, and fresh-cut fries. However, the house-made “tender” batter and the secret hot sauce with mustard, horseradish, onion, and tomato toppings have stayed the same. They still offer the same great taste they have for decades. In fall 2021, Angel Hernandez, along with Kenneth Kantner and Gregg Johnson of Minsky’s Pizza, bought the restaurant from the Herrera family. The new owners want to keep providing the same great experience the Herrera family did for 47 years. Tenderloin Grill also provides daily and weekly specials like specialty sandwiches and hot dogs to customers.
When I tried the Pig Snoot Sandwich, it was topped with mustard, horseradish, their secret hot sauce, onion, and tomato. I found that the Pig Snoot had a unique earthy taste and paired well with the other toppings. I ordered the Pig Snoot Sandwich with a side of hand-cut fries drizzled with ketchup and an orange Jarritos soda. When Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill was on Southwest Boulevard, it had arcade video games to entertain customers while they waited for their food, and they even had their own paper takeout menu. If customers are looking for a restaurant in Kansas City with unusual sandwiches, I recommend visiting Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill.
I literally was devastated and ordered the only choice I had available…Ernie felt really bad for me. He threw in a couple of chocolate chip cookies and gave me a couple of passes to come back. I appreciate that. The tenderloin sandwich was a definite and solid 8.5 and I will be going back to get that daggone Philly Cheese that I can’t get out my head…
Lots of good restaurants, grocery stores, farmers market, etc. Very good for families.
Our go to place is the brazilian restaurant and the spices store.
