I first learned about Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill from the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, who visited its location on Southwest Boulevard. My dad saw Andrew try the Pig Snoot sandwich and thought it was a “bizarre food.” I visited the restaurant for the first time in March 2022 to try that sandwich as well. I was surprised to hear that Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill was moving from Southwest Boulevard to the City Market. I miss the old location because it felt like a classic diner.

Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill opened in 1932 as the “Tenderloin Grill.” The restaurant claims to be the “Home of Kansas City’s Best Pork Tenderloin,” which they call “pork tenders.” It started as a food cart run by the Nabor family. Ricardo Herrera bought it in 1974 along with its secret recipe. The Herrera family ran the restaurant for nearly 50 years. Before running the restaurant full-time, Ricardo was the chief photographer at KMBC Channel 9. He balanced working at the restaurant and his TV job for nine months.

Over the years, they added items to the menu, including hamburgers, fish sandwiches, and fresh-cut fries. However, the house-made “tender” batter and the secret hot sauce with mustard, horseradish, onion, and tomato toppings have stayed the same. They still offer the same great taste they have for decades. In fall 2021, Angel Hernandez, along with Kenneth Kantner and Gregg Johnson of Minsky’s Pizza, bought the restaurant from the Herrera family. The new owners want to keep providing the same great experience the Herrera family did for 47 years. Tenderloin Grill also provides daily and weekly specials like specialty sandwiches and hot dogs to customers.

When I tried the Pig Snoot Sandwich, it was topped with mustard, horseradish, their secret hot sauce, onion, and tomato. I found that the Pig Snoot had a unique earthy taste and paired well with the other toppings. I ordered the Pig Snoot Sandwich with a side of hand-cut fries drizzled with ketchup and an orange Jarritos soda. When Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill was on Southwest Boulevard, it had arcade video games to entertain customers while they waited for their food, and they even had their own paper takeout menu. If customers are looking for a restaurant in Kansas City with unusual sandwiches, I recommend visiting Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill.

Loved that it was part of the River Marketplace. Tenderloin was fine. It’s pretty bland if you don’t want a lot of flavor. If I go there again I’d probably get a burger or the chicken tenders. The fries were delicious!

Super friendly and helpful staff with fast service. I had the double tender sandwich and it was excellent with the truffle fries which were also very tasty. They have a “pig snoot sandwich” and it’s exactly what it says it is. I wasn’t brave enough to try it. For hard core tenderloin purists the tenderloin has more of a crispy tempura type batter/breading that is very light and tasty. A little different than most traditional tenderloins but a welcome surprise. Stop in and give them a try, and if you are brave enough get the snoot sandwich.

So I had see an ad on FB for Tenderloin Grill. It was for their Philly Cheese Steak and the picture actually motivated me to get up and go get one!!!! I live downtown and a friend and I headed down there, and got there at 4:35pm (they close at 5pm) on a Thursday afternoon. The only T.G. employee there was a nice guy named Ernie, who looked like he had had a really long day and was wiped out, close to the end of his day. He took my friend’s order for a tenderloin sandwich. Then, he told us that all he had left the place were tenderloins and fries…NO PHILLY CHEESE SANDWICHES
I literally was devastated and ordered the only choice I had available…Ernie felt really bad for me. He threw in a couple of chocolate chip cookies and gave me a couple of passes to come back. I appreciate that. The tenderloin sandwich was a definite and solid 8.5 and I will be going back to get that daggone Philly Cheese that I can’t get out my head…

Lots of good restaurants, grocery stores, farmers market, etc. Very good for families.
Our go to place is the brazilian restaurant and the spices store.

We were a little disappointed with the tenderloins. There wasn’t a whole lot of taste or seasoning to it. And a few bites of mine has more batter than meat. The fries were good and reminded me of five guys. And the employees were nice.

Nice clean place. Being from Indiana I have a great love for Tenderloin sandwich. These were just Ok! Not heavy breaded, not huge. Taste just Ok.

This place is amazing. Possibly THE BEST burgers in town. A nice huge juicy burger with cheese, onion, pickle, horseradish sauce and their special hot sauce (no tomato for me). It was perfection! The tenderloin was a tasty option also. But in the end…I will never pass up the burger.
