After working on site today, a few of us went out for supper and I decided to step a little outside my usual comfort zone at Tawa Grill.
For $19.99 + tax and tip, the combo was definitely filling for the price. It came with four pieces of naan, a large plate of rice, a generous serving of butter chicken, and the vegetable option of the day, which was a chickpea-based dish. Thankfully, the butter chicken wasn’t too spicy for me .
The portion sizes were great — I actually couldn’t finish it all. The butter chicken had a nice flavour and the chicken was tender (maybe just slightly dry, but not overly so). I’m not a big spice person, and I wouldn’t consider this dish overly spicy at all.
The vegetable side was chickpeas dish unsure of its name, and while I appreciate that the combo includes a veggie option, it may benefit from offering a bit more choice rather than just the one vegetable dish of the day. A small salad or some greens as an alternative option could add a nice balance to the meal.
Service was fast once we were seated — the food came out quickly, and servers checked in a few times to make sure everything was good. The dine-in area is a decent size with comfortable seating. Fair warning: there are a lot of plates and pans for one meal .
Also pictured was what I believe is the tandoori boneless chicken, which was definitely much spicier. I only tried a small piece and that was enough for me, but the pickled onions on the side were tasty.
Overall, I would consider returning. There’s street parking if you can find a spot, plus a large Indigo lot across the street. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Scotia Square, so I walked this meal off on the way back to my car .
Overall verdict: Good value, generous portions, fast service — and worth a visit if you’re downtown and craving something hearty.
I had a really bad experience at this restaurant. The food I ordered was not tasty and On top of that, the salted lassi I ordered was fermented and had a sour, unpleasant taste — clearly not fresh.
The quality was far below expectations, and the service was poor and unprofessional. I was honestly very disappointed, as I expected much better. I don’t think I’ll be visiting again, and I wouldn’t recommend it based on this experience.
I’ve tried almost everything on the menu, including mutton biryani, chicken biryani, prawn biryani, butter chicken, mutton gravy, and even the butter chicken poutine. Everything was great, but the mutton gravy truly stands out—it’s hands down the best dish in my opinion.
Putting ACs ON might make a difference while you know you are far inside a building.
What truly stands out at Tawa Grill is the consistency in the quality of the food. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning customer, you can expect the same delicious flavors each time. Their Chicken Tandoori is by far the highlight of the menu. It’s a crowd favorite, and once you try it, you’ll understand why. Tender, perfectly spiced, and grilled to perfection, it captures the essence of traditional Indian cuisine. Along with this, the restaurant offers a wide array of dishes that showcase the richness of Indian flavors, but the Chicken Tandoori is a must-try for any first-timer.
If you’re looking for something refreshing to accompany your meal, the Mango Lassi is a fantastic choice. It’s the perfect balance of sweetness and tang, making it an excellent way to cool down after indulging in the bold spices of the meal.
What makes Tawa Grill even more appealing is its affordability. Despite being in such a prime location, the prices are reasonable, making it accessible to everyone. For anyone visiting Halifax or a local looking to explore new flavors, Tawa Grill should be at the top of your list.
1. Chicken is perfectly cooked, inside juicy and tender.
2. Curry also is great!! Nice flavor and good balance of seasoning.
3. Portion size is great so the price is very reasonable. There is a half size option for the majority of dishes. Half size is more than enough.
4. The vibe of this restaurant such as interior or light is not attractive but you will be satisfied with food.
Thanks chef!
