The beef stroganoff really fell short and I didn’t feel like it tasted like stroganoff at all. The beef was shaved and it was tender, it tasted more like hot dish that was flavorless then it was covered in a ton of fried onions. The Italian sandwich was described as hearty and it had mostly lettuce with only a couple slices of meat. The Thai salad lunch size was about the size of a side salad and the chicken was dry.
It is a huge restaurant so it’s probably good for big groups and was a fairly busy at lunch.
In terms of food, almost everything was good enough. One common theme was that all the vegetables were either sloppily made or they were greatly reduced in comparison to the photos that accompanied their menu. For the walleye and the top sirloin, all the zucchini bits and yellow squash bits were undercooked and therefore too hard. The terikayi salmon had a lof of teriyaki sauce that made the entire dish salty, and the salmon was slightly overcooked at the bottom, since it created quite a bit of crunch even if it was a skinless piece of salmon. All of the desserts were solid and I especially enjoyed the chocolate cake that they equipped with whiskey butter, providing the dessert with a new set of flavor.
My server, Alyssa, was very hospitable and helpful. She patiently helped me pack every single dish and labeled each one with the dish name so I wouldn’t have to be confused upon taking the food home. I thought it was a very considerate move and told her that I would include her name in my review, so here it is! Alysa did wonderful!
I wanted to like Tavern on France—truly, I did. A recent remodel hinted at fresh beginnings and bold reinvention, and in this economy, such an investment is no small feat. But while the décor may have received a facelift, the soul of the place—the food and experience—feels noticeably diminished.
Gone is the subtle charm that once paid homage to a 1920s supper club. In its place is a more generic atmosphere that seems designed less for character and more for crowds. And sadly, the food has followed suit.
I’ve dined here twice since the remodel, and both visits ended in disappointment. The menu lacks inspiration, and what is served often arrives overcooked, under-seasoned, and overpriced. The staff remains warm and accommodating—perhaps the restaurant’s strongest asset—but even excellent service can’t rescue a bland meal.
Would I return? Unlikely. However, I can understand the appeal for a younger crowd seeking sleek cocktails and a lively late-night scene. But for those hoping for a memorable dining experience anchored by flavor and flair, Tavern on France no longer delivers.
To the team at Tavern: the potential is still there. But a remodel should elevate, not erase. I hope you find your way back to what once made this place special.
Can’t go wrong going to the Tavern!
