I ordered a fall sangria and couldn’t even drink it. Definitely not for me, and I didn’t mention it because I could tell he already wasn’t thrilled I was there. For dinner, I got the NY strip steak. I’m a big steak girl, and while it was cooked perfectly, it had no flavor. A little salt goes a long way! The green beans were underdone, and the fries came out cold. For $40, I left wishing I had gone to Texas Roadhouse instead.
My friend tried the General Tso’s chicken and said it was dry and way too spicy. On the plus side, the ranch dip appetizer was good, but it came with literally two carrot sticks and two celery sticks, which felt like more of a garnish. The chips however, were pretty good.
All in all, the view was great, but it didn’t make up for the mid-level food and lackluster service.
The one standout for us was the sweet potato fries — those were really good. I also want to mention that our waiter was very sweet and did a great job. The service was excellent.
Overall, while the staff was wonderful, the food just didn’t meet our expectations
Starting with service: guests now wait 20 minutes or more only to receive oddly tasting cocktails. While it was nice not being charged for the drinks, I would much rather pay for a properly made cocktail than be served something of questionable quality. The bartenders now, disappear after you find a seat or seem unsure how to assist guests even with simple requests, questions, etc.
Moving on to the food: in past visits, the food was always appetizing, fresh, and cooked to proper safety standards. Now, the food matches the service—subpar at best. My chicken was severely undercooked and inedible. Although the rest of my meal was fine, I strongly recommend skipping the food entirely. If you choose to visit, your best option is to go to the first floor for a drink and dine at one of the surrounding restaurants instead.
As a disclaimer, this is strictly my honest review of the Salem location. I have had no prior issues at other Tavern in the Square locations. My experience may not have been the same as others and I’d like to remind everyone my opinion is not the only one out there. Best of luck to the Tavern in the Square Salem.
The food never disappoints. I usually go with a few apps and a burger, and it always hits the spot. The drinks are great too, whether you’re grabbing a casual beer or something a little more crafted. The place is always bumpin’, which just adds to the overall experience.
I also recently found out they take reservations, which is a game-changer considering how popular it is. Definitely one of my go-to spots in Salem!
My only observation is that I saw the servers wrapping the silverware without wearing gloves
