Fantastic taqueria food with a super lively vibe!!

I’ll always be faithful to my ol’ reliable, Taqueria Guadalajara…but I daresay Jalapeño has narrowly edged it out! My Sopes were phenomenal; crunchy on the edge, soft in the middle and loaded with delicious toppings.

I couldn’t be happier and will definitely be back!

Hello friends, it’s your review guy. Everything here is delicious! They’re quick to serve and the food and prices are the best around. I highly recommend stopping in to have something authentic. You won’t be disappointed.

Never again. First time going here ordered two tacos no onions, with just tomatoes and cilantro. Chips and queso chips and guacamole. Got there and they had four tacos that they put queso and guacamole with two bags of chips and charged me $30. I said no. This was a 20-minute drive for me to drive over. I ordered two tacos with chips and queso and chips and guacamole and it was completely messed up I don’t know how but this is happening with every single restaurant in Madison. Why? Then they said they corrected it and put the money back on my card which is false. Send me home saying they put chips in queso in the bag and the two tacos. Complete lie. Just chips and salsa for $20. Calling my credit union to have the charges reversed in the morning. Charged me twice. Unbelievable.
There is no viable Mexican restaurant in Madison and when I was walking out I was called a gringa punta.
I was nice as pie to you, and I even tipped you. But I’m a white woman so you trashed me out. That’s racist. But then again so is Madison and I’m not even a Republican.
There is no viable Mexican restaurant in Madison each one has screwed up royally. I speak English just fine and I confirmed speaking Spanish as well. This is just nuts.

Let me start this by saying I grew up in Chicago, so I am very picky and biased when it comes to Mexican food. I LOVE this place. So far, it’s my favorite that I’ve had in Wisconsin, and every time we’re out, tacos are our go-to. It is always fast and sizzling hot. It is SO fresh. When we left Madison, I was so sad, and we finally moved back so I get my favorite spot back. Even delivery is incredibly fast. Service is amazing. Their prices are incredibly reasonable, especially compared to other nearby spots with similar menu options. My tummy is so happy with that nice full feeling every time we walk out the door. I cannot say enough good things about El Jalapeno.

I’ve had the pleasure of eating at Taqueria El Jalapeño several times, and this place is legit. There is ample parking and it’s located right off the exit to Verona Rd/Midvale. The restaurant has a lovely interior. I love the colorful carved tables, chairs and booths. As soon as you sit down, chips and salsa make their way to the table. Both are very tasty – and the hot sauce that comes in the red bottle is fantastic. On my most recent visit, I ordered the taco salad with pork and my partner got three tacos (chorizo, al pastor and combination). All of the protein is cooked and seasoned perfectly. PER-FECT-LYYYYY. The sauce that comes with the taco salad was great. The food was cooked and delivered to our table in minutes. Also, the service is absolutely top notch. One of the best things about Taqueria El Jalapeño is the value due to their very generously priced menu. There is better tasting, less expensive food at El Jalapeño than a very popular fast-casual joint that some call chi-pottle. Do yourself a solid, and go to El Jalapeño instead. It’s better, cheaper and it’s a locally owned small business. Bravo, El Jalapeño, you’re doing your thing!

We went on a Sunday at 11:30 pm and only about 5 tables were taken in the restaurant.

This was my first time here and came by recommendations on Madison foodie groups on Facebook and my nephews recommendations. Here is what I found.

Quick service. Seemed to be 5 waitstaff with very little customers it should be. Drink orders were taken right away and the chips and salsa were delivered immediately.

Loved the crisp fresh taste of the chips. Unusually do not like very runny salsa, but this salsa here had just the right amount of taste (heat) that made it taste very well. I still like Loredo’s salsa better, but this one was now my #2 salsa.

I chose the chimichanga by recommendation of my nephew who eats here a lot. In fact, he recommended about 6 things.
As the picture shows, you get two six inch chimichanga’s with your choice of meat and I went with ground beef. The presentation was nice, the rice and beans were plentiful compliments for them, but it lacked any taste at all! It was quite bland to the point where the deep fried crust actually had more flavor than the meat inside.

With that, I ended up asking for another salsa and poured that on the chimichanga making it much better. I have never had meat with absolutely no taste.

My dining partners order a ground beef burrito and again, she stated it had no flavor at all and would not get it again. The other guest, my nephew order the steak burrito and said it was very good. Possibly different seasoning on the steak than ground beef?

One dining partner ordered the guacamole appetizer and it never arrived as the dinners were presented. She asked where it was and they apologized and quickly made it and brought it out.

The problem with the appetizer was that the chips were arranged in two rings ( circles) on a small plate. Between the circles they plopped down guacamole in a circle so that every chip got guacamole on them whether you liked it or not.

The problem with this presentation on such a small plate made it look like you received very little guacamole . Also, we were hoping the cooks wore gloves when arranging the chips in the circle pattern. A better way to present this would have been to have the guacamole in a dish and get a basket of chips. This is not that fancy of a place to arrange the chips on a plate.

The guacamole was flavorful and full of zest, it was just the presentation was something to be desired.

A few of the heating/air conditioning vents definitely need to be vacuumed clean. Be careful as you sit at a booth as they have a glass slab on the top of table that moves way too easily.

I would come back to try something else sometime to give this place another try. Hopefully I will get a more tasteful meal.

I am one of the top 7% Google reviewers in the Midwest and my photos have been seen over 2.3 million times along with my reviews.

Great family-owned restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food for a great price.

We went here on a whim because they were one of the few sit-down restaurants that serve food after 9pm. We were able to be seated immediately and served promptly.

The booths are HUGE and very comfortably fit 3-4 adults on each side. Each table/booth is unique with beautiful designs and bright colors (see photos).

They have a smaller menu but they do great with all the dishes offered. This menu specifically has the most traditional/authentic Mexican dishes of any of the restaurants in the area.

Their chips and salsa are delicious. You are served a mild red salsa with a bottle of spicy salsa to add if you so choose.

We ordered the Chicken Enchilada dinner and 3 tacos al a carte (pescado, camarón and al pastor) with a side of rice and beans.

The food was satiating and satisfying. My partner specifically could not stop raving about the al pastor taco. They said it was the best they’ve had and would get that next time we come.

If you want to save some money, bring cash because they charge a $1 fee for using credit/debit cards.

There are not many options for vegtarians on the menu so I would not recommend this restaurant if you require those dietary needs.

There is plenty of parking in the free parking lot outside the restaurant. They also have a great take-out system.

Tried this place on the hunt for great tacos in Madison. Turns it to be just ok. The chimichanga was really good, but the tacos were average. Nothing to write home about, so I’ll write you…lol! The tacos were cheap though, so that was nice. The atmosphere was pretty cool, kind of in a low key area. Easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Service was incredibly friendly, albeit a little slow. Don’t wait for the check at the table, pay at the register. The menu is extensive, so try several different things if you want. We also only tried three of the tacos, so the others might be bangin’! The hunt continues!!!

I ordered the most expensive thing on their menu and it was still only $19.99. came with rice, beans, salsa fresca, tortillas, grilled cactus and pickled carrots! The flavors were incredible. So satisfying to actually enjoy your food! That it is half the price of most places and tastes twice as good – just makes it even more satisfying. Go there! I promise, you won’t be disappointed..

This was a unique Mexican dining experience. The custom chairs and tables were quaint and fun. Our food was pretty good, though my fish tacos were oddly lacking some flavor. Service wasn’t as attentive as we would have liked, but the staff was friendly and welcoming. We would definitely visit again.
