I am a local but this was my first time at Taproot, it was delicious, I will definitely go back soon.
I had the Signature Short Ribs with Mashed Potatoes and garlic roasted green beans. I’ll admit when the food came out, I thought I was going to leave hungry, but it really was plenty of food.
I also started with the appetizer they had in special, some breaded mushrooms with rooster sauce. They were good, but I was wishing I would have tried the Calamari.
The server was so friendly and great. Pretty too. 😉
The restaurant is on Merchant Street in downtown Decatur, one of the coolest streets in Decatur with lights stretched over the street.

Absolutely amazing! The freshly baked rolls are served drenched in melted butter. The perfectly cooked butcher’s steak, served with twice baked potato and roasted garlic green beans, was one of the best meals I’ve had in a restaurant.
Edit: I’ve been back a few more times. The short ribs are excellent. The drunken pork chop was just average, not much flavor from the bourbon and maple. Probably one of the best cups of French onion soup I’ve had. The hot rock appetizer is incredible.

Came early on a Saturday night (5pm). First off, our server was great- friendly and attentive. I’m sorry I didn’t make note of her name. She was especially accommodating with our 3 year old. Although TapRoot has high chairs they don’t have a written kids menu but offered fried chicken or mini corn dogs.
For the adults we ordered the lobster-stuffed mushrooms (which were tasty) and the cheese curds (which had a great dipping sauce). For entrees- the burger (it was O.K.) and the crab-encrusted cod (which was NOT worth $27 and only had about 50% of the cod “encrusted.”). We tried one cocktail which was average. The brownie dessert was cooked in a skillet and ended up being dry, but very chocolaty.
Overall a pleasant meal but a little pricey.
Also note they do NOT have a changing table in the bathroom if you come with young children. I was unable to change my 1 year old in the bathroom; however, the hostess was accommodating and found me a private spot to do her diaper change.

We came here because the grille was having a private event and we were hungry. From the outside, it doesn’t look as nice as the inside is! I thought it was going to be like a pub and grille. But the black linen table clothes, fresh flowers on every table, low lighting and soft music background, makes this spot an incredibly romantic date night spot. We were sat near a window and the waiter quickly greeted us at the table for our drink order. The espresso martini is like drinking chocolate covered coffee beans and I immediately decided I would like to have one of them every morning instead of my normal coffee. We ordered cheese curds from the appetizer menu and those were decent, however we weren’t crazy about the cocktail sauce for the dip. A simple marinara would have been nice. For dinner I ordered the veggie burger on the pretzel bun with fries. It has a very distinct flavor, but a good one at that. With a little sauce or seasoning of some sort, this burger would be perfect. My boyfriend had the regular burger with bacon and fries and says it was good, but nothing special. However, the dessert was HEAVENLY. The dessert made everything else worth it. We ordered the strawberry shortcake and my goodness. This was a dessert that left us wanting more. Our service was fantastic, food was decent, atmosphere was intimate and romantic…over all, it was a great experience. Next time we are in town we will plan a date night here!

I would normally give Taproot a much higher rating but all I can honestly give is a 2.0-2.5 rating after last night’s dining experience. Our reservation was at 7:30 and our food did not come out until 9:00. We had a party of 8 (celebrating several birthdays). Most of us ordered twice baked potatoes – they later came out to tell us they were out (okay, that happens). We ordered garlic mashed potatoes instead. When our food finally came out some of us had mashed potatoes and some of us did not (they ran out of those as well). Our food was barely warm (the mashed potatoes were cold). I ordered the truffle filet medium-rare and it was cooked medium-well. All of our meat was overcooked except for one steak (he likes his well done). The drinks were good, the cheese curds & crab dip apps were yummy, and the bread is always delicious. Taproot has a nice atmosphere. We have been many times but last night was sub par. The manager came out to apologize and some of our meals were taken off (the meals we didn’t eat). We will go back but it won’t be for a long time. I hope whatever happened was just a bad night and they can fix it.

Always a favorite in Downtown Decatur. This restaurant never lets me down and is always the guest favorite. Staff is attentive and the food is amazing. My go to meal here is the drinking pork chop, twice backed potato, and the classic old fashioned. If it’s your first time try the hot rock, always a group pleaser.

Absolutely the best place for quality food! The filet is ahmazinggggg! So good with that herb butter…it’s everything! Quality USA meat and they print where it’s from, which is so nice. Servers are so friendly and on point. Atmosphere is charming and vintage, and cozy. Again…all the food is fabulous! The best in Decatur. Keep up the great work. We love it here.

My buddy and I went there after being turned away from the restaurant to the north. Glad we did. I had the New York stip, garlic mashed potatoes and root vegetables. All were exceptional. My buddy had the glazed pork chop, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. He was also very pleased. I definitely would recommend eating there.
