I really want to love this place. I’ve tried numerous menu items, both breakfast and lunch, but it’s been pretty hit or miss for me.

The brisket quesadilla sounded amazing, and it was alright, but it could have used a bit more seasoning or sauce. That could also be on me for not ordering it. Rice was a bit undercooked and really crunchy, which again was not my usual experience. But the collard greens were some of the best I’ve ever had. They had great flavor and a big kick at the end. Be careful with these if you don’t like spice.

Overall, I want small, local places like this to succeed. The staff is great, the food is hot, and the wait-time isn’t bad at all. I’d much rather spend my money here than in another chain— the theme that seems to be taking over Athens. I’ll have to try more of the menu to come to a better conclusion about this place.

Hands down one of my favorite spots to eat in Athens. It’s a reminder of home, being from the state of Texas myself!!!(1/11/26)

FYI I’d much rather deal with service from the mother than the daughter. The portion difference is ridiculous. I’ve eaten the same breakfast 3days in a row. Today was by far the worst value for my price. She(the daughter) gave me the portions size of a toddler. Then proceeded to tell me that her mother instructed her to give that way. Not to mention I left a tip. Paying before you receive your food is a catch 22 now a days. I can’t for get to mention the pieces of foil found in my toddler portion of brisket today. Safe to say that I’ll keep driving the next time I see her at the window!(1/13/26)

First time at Tamez. It wasn’t what I expected, it was better. The food has an authentic Hispanic flare. When I first opened the take out container? I was thrilled to find a homemade tortilla. That tortilla was delicious. I then tried the slaw and POW it was a bit of fireworks in the mouth with the perfect amount of unexpected jalapeño. I loved the slaw. Next I tried the collards. They were flavorful and made from fresh greens. They were banging out the bold flavor. Although, they were a little too spicy for me (a wimp), I can appreciate the side for others. The pulled pork is a YES!!!! It’s large pulled pieces with a nice bark. It’s juicy and flavorful. It stands alone and does not need sauce, but she let me sample both of their house sauces. Both are amazing, I do prefer the BBQ but would gladly take either. The service at the drive up window was top notch. She was so helpful, delightful and kind. I will certainly be back!!!!

Great breakfast burritos and plates, we all tried different meats and toppings. Everything was fresh (especially the tortillas) and delicious and the folks were sweet! Definitely a new favorite and will come a lot! Drive thru options too.

I usually don’t leave bad reviews, and I give chances because I’m a business owner myself and I understand everybody has there days.

But this is the 5th time we have spent our money with no apology for no sympathy for terrible service and food.

We used to love this place but it fell offf bad.
The barbacoa is always old/overcooked and dried out and on top on that all the grease isn’t drained before it’s out in the taco. I mean it literally was like beef jerky the last couple of times no exaggeration. Look for yourself.

Killer family owned bbq joint! Sisters-in-law in the front of the house with more family in the kitchen.

Thursdays’ street tacos are the best deal in town.

Now with a full bar in Watkinsville. You’ll find me here for March Madness for sure!

I stopped here with my son for a breakfast burrito because I’d heard how good they are. I told the cashier to make it however she recommended and clearly that was the right choice. Phenomenal burrito. Highly recommended!

Tried this mainly for brisket. Of the sampler plate only 2 meats were there. For canned drinks they only had Sprite and zero calorie Coke. They were about 50% ready for business. The potato salad was different and not good. The “cowboy beans” was definitely not good. The person at the window was nice but the fact they only had one other customer should have been a signal to avoid. The pork was okay, but it seemed more like crock pot cooked than cooked over wood. The brisket was sliced razor thin and only about a 3 out of 5 for good brisket taste and texture. Big waste of $50. Maybe the restaurant used to be good, but what we saw was terrible.

Stopped by to try this place for the first time during lunch. I ordered the brisket plate with macaroni and collard greens as my sides. Meal was around $19 including an added drink before any tip. This was my first time having brisket and I’m not sure I would ever have it again if this is how it’s suppose to be cooked. It lacked any flavor to me and was only edible because of the sauce. The sides I tried were terrible. I opened my macaroni and immediately realized I had been served something similar to boxed mac and cheese except the boxed macaroni from Kraft may have tasted better. The “macaroni” only tasted like noodles and pasta water with absolutely no seasoning or even hint of cheese flavoring. The “cheese” used must be the liquid packaged stuff you get out of boxed macaroni but severely watered down. I tried adding salt and pepper to it and it was still inedible and bland. It was quite literally the worst macaroni I’ve ever been served. The collard greens tasted like they were made with pickle juice for some odd reason and that was off putting to me. They had a kick to them but definitely not the collard greens I am use to. If this is how BBQ is in Texas I’m not jumping to go try it anytime soon and I don’t see myself returning to this restaurant. I ended up throwing the majority of the food away unfortunately. Many people seem to love this place so maybe I just caught them on a bad day.

Extraordinary breakfast tacos. This unassuming little eatery with no indoor seating (but plenty outside) has the best taco in Athens. These perfectly sized tacos are so much better than those tasteless rolled up Sunday paper “burritos” you get at the chain places.
Your order is cheerfully taken and can be filled with fresh ingredients such as egg, potato, brisket, chorizo jalapeño and many other goodies. Cooked fresh and brought to you.
I gotta come back for the brisket- I hear it is the best this side of Texas. I don’t doubt it.
If I lived nearby, Tamez BBQ would be on a weekly rotation.
10 stars.
Highly recommended.
