The server was wonderful. I was immediately tended to upon entry. The place was clean and someone was always ready to help if needed.
I ordered a fried seafood platter, and had some carrots on the side with some Cole slaw.
The food in general was decent and well cooked (minus two below exceptions). The food felt very generic (as I’ve had it before and it didn’t feel like they were doing anything with it) which isn’t a bad thing and is typical of a diner but this diner is priced higher than your average diner so I expected more.
Started with the soup, which was a Manhattan Clam Chowder. It was fantastic, well seasoned, and robust. Plenty of seafood present mixed with with the veggies.
My entree was all fried and I did not notice any issues with greasiness or bitter/old oil which implies to me they change their oil regularly. That is a nice plus for me personally.
The breaded fish fillet was good but lacked seasoning. Was tender and juicy.
The breaded shrimp was good but lacked seasoning and to be honest, resembled the panko shrimp I make from a frozen box bought from Costco for $2 a serving.
The breaded cake I had some parts were chewy. Overall it was good though and actually seasoned more.
The sides were the biggest let down. I had carrots that were mush and tasted like something that would come out of a can. Carrots should have had some maillard being they were called “candy carrots” and should have had more bite. I also don’t mind adding S+P as needed but there was a lacking of seasoning with these as well. Considering they were one of the special sides at the time, I was really looking forward to having some caramelized carrots and that’s not what I got. Even if they just sauteed those carrots for 2 minutes to add some color to them, it would have done a lot to make up for the texture.
The Cole slaw was definitely just generic cole slaw out of a tub bought from distro. It was good but I’ve had it a hundred times.
The cheesecake dessert was wonderful. While the portion size was extreme, it was very well presented and was deliciously smooth.
If I went back in the future it would be for their baked goods as the effort they put into those products seemed to outweigh that of the specials. I can look past salt and pepper as I can sort that myself but nothing else came through.
I have never seen such warm and welcoming service from a local diner since I was a kid.
A big shout out to Jamie for making my experience here worthwhile.
