Reviews
Now. My honest take — with love.
Service? Excellent. Friendly, attentive, professional. Our server was a delight!
Two small things to flag, though:
• Noise level: it was way louder than I expected for a bistro. Less “soft Parisian chatter,” more “Saturday night soundtrack.” Not a dealbreaker, but if you’re hoping for an intimate catch-up where you don’t need to lip-read your friends, just know it’s lively.
• And… where is the chocolate mousse? I truly miss it. A French menu without chocolate mousse feels like Paris without the Eiffel Tower — technically possible, but emotionally confusing. If Tableau is listening: s’il vous plaît, bring it back. The people (me) are asking.
But the pricing? Mon dieu.
$25 for toast with mushrooms is… how do I say this delicately… bold. That toast arrived like it had a trust fund and a personal stylist. Was it bad? No. Was it life-changing? Also no. For $25, I expected a tiny choir to emerge and sing me into a new era.
And that’s really the story here: the ambience is charming, the service is solid — but the menu feels priced for the fantasy, not the portion. Personally, I don’t think I’ll be returning, because the value just isn’t there for me.
If you’re going for the vibe, the patio, and a cocktail that makes you feel slightly more glamorous than you are — you’ll probably have a lovely time. Just arrive prepared: emotionally, spiritually, and financially.
Since our first visit — when we enjoyed the Seafood Eiffel Tower as part of a larger group and were genuinely impressed by both the variety and execution — we’ve returned to Tableau several times, and it has become a favourite whenever we’re in Vancouver. The consistency across food, cocktails, and service has remained excellent, and the warm, cozy atmosphere continues to be a big part of its appeal.
On a recent visit as a party of two, we considered ordering the tower again but ultimately passed, as the oyster is not a favourite for us and easier to enjoy when shared among a larger table. Given how much we enjoyed it the first time, it would be wonderful to see a bit of flexibility — perhaps the option to substitute one item, or a slightly less seafood-heavy version.
That said, Tableau continues to deliver a polished, welcoming experience, and it remains a place we happily return to.
Original review:
Tableau Bar Bistro is one of Vancouver’s hidden gems, offering authentic French cuisine that’s otherwise hard to come by in this part of Canada. From escargots and frog legs to bone marrow, the menu features all the French staples executed with classic technique and a modern touch.
We started with the Seafood Eiffel Tower — an impressive sampler of key appetizers including mussels, bone marrow, beef tartare, shrimp, and other seafood. Every component was beautifully prepared and well-balanced. We also ordered the mushroom sandwich, which is a must-try: rich, deeply flavorful, and absolutely melts in your mouth.
For the mains, I had the steak au poivre. It was well-executed and cooked perfectly, though the flavor profile felt a little understated compared to the phenomenal appetizers that preceded it.
The restaurant more than redeemed itself with dessert. The crème brûlée was among the best I’ve ever had — silky custard with a perfectly caramelized top — and the profiterole was another standout.
Unfortunately, I don’t have photos, as this meal was part of a formal gathering, but every plate was beautifully presented. Tableau delivers a genuine French dining experience in the heart of Vancouver, and it’s an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates classic French flavors done right.
The French toast was absolutely delicious—perfectly prepared and full of flavor. The Croque Madame was another favorite, made with great quality ingredients and served beautifully. Everything was consistently fresh and tasty.
On top of the food, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff are so kind and welcoming. The combination of excellent quality and very reasonable prices makes this place a true gem.
Highly recommend—I can’t wait to come back! Thank you
Would recommend for business lunch, girls night or date night.
The best offering of food items for happy hour, today we shared: the steak frites, nicoise salad with scallops, french onion soup.
They have the best dessert, so save room for their crepe cake, yes its exactly as it sounds: a cake made of little crepes – topped with creme anglaise and sour cherries.
What I appreciate most is the no-pressure service—they’re attentive without hovering, happy to answer questions, and always respectful of your pace.
Service is consistently fast and efficient, yet never rushed. Everything flows smoothly, which speaks volumes about how well the place is run.
The food is the highlight. Each meal is beautifully prepared, thoughtfully plated, and full of authentic French flavors. You can tell care and pride go into every dish, from simple classics to more refined options.
Overall, Tableau is a place that strikes the perfect balance: excellent food, friendly and relaxed service, and an atmosphere that makes you want to come back again and again. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys quality French cuisine without pretension.
The food was so good as well and definitely elevated – the croissant was just fantastic! My wife had the eggs Benedict and it was so good!
When we arrived, we were seated right in the middle of the restaurant.
The food looked good but that was about it.
The oysters were not fresh, the steak tasted cheap, and the margarita was basically 90% ice.
The server kept coming back every five minutes asking how everything was, which honestly felt more like fishing for tips than good service.
Other than the décor, there was nothing I was happy with.
First time here, and definitely the last.
