We read some mixed reviews/ health report. But tried our luck anyways. Found parking on the side of the building but I’ve been told a lot of people have to park at UPS and get their parking validated which seems like a hassle. Coming from another state and not being familiar I wouldn’t want to have to do that. We were seated immediately and ordered scallion pancakes and crab rangoons to start. I had the general tso’s for entree and my wife had a dry pot that sat over a flame. Everything was fantastic! Even down to the bathroom being super clean. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for good Asian food in Rochester.

We’ve gotten takeout plenty of times, but this was our first time going in person. I should have taken more pictures because the decor is lovely. Staff was incredibly attentive and kind. And of course the food is great! We got soup dumplings, chicken and broccoli (garlic sauce), and kung pao chicken. All were delicious. I need to explore more of the menu!

I’ve been craving the dan dan noodles I had in Chengdu (Szechuan Province), and these noodles taste pretty dang close. They hit the spot, especially with that classic mouth-numbing Szechuan peppercorn flavor. I would’ve just added a bit more meat and crushed peanuts for crunch. BUT, delicious!

Didn’t realize the sizzling shrimp dish would be breaded shrimp, but it was super good—she asked if we wanted hot or mild, suggesting that hot would be too hot, so we asked for medium spicy. It was definitely spicy enough so yeah, hot would’ve been too hot. It comes with either white or fried rice. We got green tea too.

We got a duck dish on another visit and it was good but very very salty. The spicy popcorn chicken (La Zi Ji) is REALLY good, crispy and flavorful, slightly spicy and garlicky.

The General Tao’s lunch special chicken kinda disappointed me; it looked so red, like they added red 40 coloring, which I haven’t seen in other restaurants’ general Tao’s before—it’s usually brownish. Tasted different too. Overall just felt like super Americanized but ah well, should’ve known to stick with the Szechuan dishes.

The xiao long bao and pan fried chicken dumplings were good.

The decor inside is SO cool! The menu is quite extensive, with both the classic American Chinese options (general Tso’s, etc) and super authentic Szechuan dishes. Great service too. Highly recommend

I have enjoyed many meals in Chengdu China over the years and I can say these guys know how to make Szechuan food! The Chongqing chicken was spot on and so was the beef pepper pot. Will be back.

We come to this place whenever we are in Rochester, NY. The Szechuan cuisine is authentic and delicious. However, be warned that the spicy dishes can get very spicy. For those like us who have little tolerance for spicy food, ask for mild.

The service staff was excellent and the atmosphere was fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant to all.

This one’s easy and straightforward: Szechuan Opera is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Rochester, NY—and that’s coming from someone who lived on the West Coast for years.

The food has real, traditional spices and bold flavor. Nothing tastes watered down, and everything is seasoned the way you hope it’ll be when you order Chinese food.

Last time I got chicken fried rice, orange chicken, pan-fried dumplings, and crab rangoon. The fried rice was solid and well-seasoned, the orange chicken was crispy with a good sauce, the dumplings were nicely pan-seared, and the crab rangoon was fresh, crunchy, and hit the comfort-food spot.

I’ve only done takeout, so I can’t say much about the ambience, but it’s centrally located with decent parking. Inside is traditionally decorated, and there’s a giant golden throne in the lobby that’s great for a quick picture.

Service has always been speedy and friendly—orders come out fast, everything’s packed well, and the staff is consistently nice.

We went to this place a few times and it was fine until last weekend. We ordered beef stew in clay pot, paid additional $3 to add potato. The potatoes have sprouted, which could be toxic and shouldn’t be severed at all. When I pointed it out, the server simply said they didn’t notice, just cut and cook right away. – this is really unacceptable, for both the food and the attitude .

If you come here, prepare to be adventurous and delighted by the bold flavors that you can discover. I will say almost everything I tried was interesting and had a unique spice that quickly brightened my day after work. If you don’t feel like being adventurous, stick to the Chinese menu. However if you are up for an adventure make sure you try a little bit of everything. We had such a good meal and fun here. I can’t wait to try the next thing in the menu that I never have heard of or thought of ordering before.

The place is clean. The food is quick and service was top notch. I will say one of my favorite Asian cuisine in Rochester. From the soup dumplings to the dry fried spicy shrimp, our meal was anything but ordinary.

I really loved the interior of the place- very beautifully decorated. The service was good, and the food was okay. For our appetizer, we had fried crab cheese wontons, which were really good.

We chose items from the lunch special, which included spring rolls ( or you could opt for a soup). For our main dishes, we had chicken in garlic sauce and sesame chicken, both served with rice. I personally like the sesame chicken better. Portion size was good too.

For dessert I had mango juice sago and we also tried bubble tea ( taro and sakura rose milk tea). Unfortunately, both were too diluted in flavor. Overall, because I really loved the interior, I’d rate this place 3.5/5. It’s a good spot to enjoy Chinese food, especially for the ambiance.

I managed to get tickets to Jon Batiste (thanks Dad!!) back-to-back in Toronto and Montreal on a Tuesday and Wednesday and I planned a roadtrip from home in Central Vermont out to Niagara Falls and then Toronto, Montreal and back down to Hartland. My plan was to leave directly from work on the Monday at like 3pm and drive to Niagara Falls. I figured that was about as far as I could make it that first night. In hindsight I think I probably could have made it to Toronto that night. But I guess, better safe than sorry. I was making such good time across the NYS Thruway that I decided to find a spot opened late to get something to eat (I had snacked my way across New York…).

Rochester was the only place with anything open late and really wasn’t a detour of any consequence. I had no idea there was LEGIT Szechuan food in Rochester?? I mean, I guess, how would I know? It’s been a few decades since I lived in Upstate NY.

Szechuan Opera was open until 10pm and I pulled in shortly after 9. The menu is huge. Excellent variety of all sorts of things, including Dim Sum. My problem was I didn’t have a plan. I hate not having a plan when I’m going to a restaurant. I’m THAT person! I read menus and choose items ahead of time. Which probably seems ridiculous. I own a restaurant and I have a somewhat absurdly large menu at my own place. Yet I am one of those people that just does not like to go into a new spot “cold.” I always feel like I maximize my dining experience if I review the menu before.

My other “issue” is that I don’t really ever want to try one thing. I want to try as many things as possible and that does require a plan of attack!

Service was really good and everyone was very friendly. Although they don’t allow anyone to sit/eat at the bar? So I had to sit a table by myself. I am just not a fan of that. But, last minute dining choices late at night…

Got my water, got tea, got truly horrible sake. HAHAHAHA That was my fault. They’ve just got one terrible sake they serve hot (NEVER drink hot sake my friends).

It was a little tricky to find menu items that did not have beef, pork or poultry (which I don’t eat). I decided to focus on appetizers and Dim Sum so I could try a few, different things. Because I just couldn’t convince myself to commit to one or even two items! LOL

FYI: All portions at Szechuan Opera are huge. Regardless of whether they’re called “appetizers” or something else. I wound up with a ridiculous amount of food!

What I Ordered:

Chengdu Style Mung Bean Noodle: Look, when the waiter tells you it’s spicy and you’re in a Szechuan restaurant. Believe them. Delicious, but your taste buds might need some time to recover…

Wood Ear Mushroom with Garlic: OMG!!! First these Mushrooms were the biggest I’d ever seen. I could eat this dish all day. It was so insanely delicious. Wow.

Crispy Cucumber with Garlic: gorgeous, beautiful fresh, delicious.

Crispy Shrimp with Tofu Roll Dim Sum: I think this might be the best fried food item I’ve ever eaten. Hot and crispy right from the oil. Paper thin tofu wrapper. Everything about this was perfection.

Pan Fried Chives and Shrimp Dumpling: Also wonderful and delicious.

Black Truffle and Mixed Mushroom Dumpling: Skip these. Meh. Not so tasty and I didn’t love the wet, gummy consistency.

IMO I ate an impressive amount of what I ordered. Because some of these were just so good I didn’t want to stop. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Don’t get the sake.
