excellent Szechuan food and a great dining experience! Loved everything about the place: good, atmosphere, staff. I really love the twice cooked pork, chicken in hot pot and the hot and spicy chicken. Would definitely suggest for a great dining experience!

Great options all across the menu. I’ve ordered the Spicy Crispy Pork Intestine from here many many times, and every time it’s perfect, texture you daydream about. Other places have fried pork intestine on the menu but it doesn’t melt in your mouth like this. Crucial stuff.

They put way too much oil on their food which is extremely unhealthy even if they are cooking with olive oil. Even extra-virgin olive oil may impair our arteries’ ability to relax and dilate normally, its use should be curtailed. Cooking without oil is surprisingly easy. To keep foods from sticking, sauté in wine, sherry, broth, vinegar, or just plain water. For baking, I’ve successfully used mashed bananas or avocado, soaked prunes, and even canned pumpkin to substitute for oil to provide a similar moistness. I would like to see more whole food plant based options and vegan options without oil.

Our total was $50. My sesema chicken was burnt, was to have only white meat it did not. Another meal the chicken was rubbery, & the third was cold. I WOULD NOT RECOOMEND ORDERING FROM THIS PLACE. We were from out of town. We went by review ratings. These rating were WRONG!!!!!!

Personally, the best goto Chinese restaurant in Ames. Have tried Mongolian Grill, Taste Place, and Wok N Roll, but Szechuan House would be the top pick, with Taste Place coming in second. Recommend the red braised pork, village chicken, and fried pork intestines(if you like those). The fish dishes are so-so, but overall, they have really good dishes for pork, chicken, and beef.

Ever since Szechuan House opened in Ames, I haven’t frequented any other Chinese places in Ames (except for Panda Express when i want some orange chicken and Beijing beef). Although their food prices are quite high for Ames standards (unless you frequent The Cafe and Aunt Maudes), their portion is also quite large and is suitable for family-style dining. Szechuan House does live up to their name and serves very good/authentic Szechuan cuisine. If you don’t know what this means, just beware of the evil little “hua jiao” that will leave an exquisite tingling sensation on your tongue. Pretty much over half of the menu is spicy, and there are some fairly authentic Chinese ingredients (like animal innards) that might deter your typical American diner. The staff is very friendly and the service is lightning quick. There is a private dining room available, but I’ve never inquired as how to reserve the space given that the main dining space is more than sufficient for my past visits.

Returned to Szechuan House today. It was very tasty, had the 3 pepper beef, with 3 ingredient pot stickers, everything was delicious, especially the beef. Not overcooked, had a salty crust to it which made it awesome in my mind. Peppers were fresh and crunchy, nothing looked old and brown. Three ingedient potstickers means 3 different types, pork, vegetable, and a mixture of pork/shrimp, sauce was very good. Only complaints were main course came before appetizer, awkward, and waitress forgot about us, (should refill drinks), overall not bad visit…

Due to COVID the place is still takeout only, but that hasn’t lowered the food quality. Would definitely recommend the crab rangoon especially.
