I’ve been coming to Szechuan Empire for many years, and historically it’s been one of my favorite Szechuan restaurants in the area. I haven’t been in over a year, but I’ve always appreciated their consistency, their flavorful dishes, and especially their pan-fried pork potstickers. Those potstickers used to be the standout item—fresh, hand-made, perfectly pan-seared, and loaded with flavor. They were honestly some of the best around.
Unfortunately, during my most recent visit, things just felt off. I know that even great Szechuan restaurants have off days, and I’ve experienced that from time to time at various spots, but this visit was noticeably below their usual standard.
The biggest disappointment—and the main reason for my two-star rating—is that they no longer make their potstickers in-house. They now use pre-made ones, and the difference is immediate. They taste more like something from a frozen package than the freshly made dumplings they were known for. When I asked, the staff confirmed they stopped making them because they were too much work. I completely understand the effort involved, but this was one of the items that set them apart from other places, and losing that quality really affects the experience.
On top of that, the chicken dish I ordered was mediocre at best. The flavor wasn’t what I remembered, and overall the food just didn’t match the level of quality I’ve always associated with this restaurant.
I’m writing this review in hopes management sees it, because I know how good this place can be. If they returned to making the potstickers from scratch and brought back the consistency they were known for, I’d happily come back. But if my next visit is anything like this one, it may unfortunately be my last.

This place was one of my favorite restaurants in the NW suburbs for 20 years! – I fell in love with hot, spicy Szechuan dishes living in Taiwan many years ago – and they long had a cook from Taiwan who made their food the same, authentic way! – No more! I got what was long my favorite dish, ‘Shredded pork in garlic sauce’ a few days ago – Nothing like how it should be made – like the previous Taiwanese cook made it. It did have pork strips (-not finer shreds like it should) – and red bell peppers – which the authentic recipes do Not have at all! Another oddity now is this place will Absolutely Not make my supposedly ‘Szechuan’ food hot! No matter what I say; or how I plead with the waitress – the cook there now will NOT add Any significant amount of chili spice into the food! I’ve experienced it over and over recently. The ONLY way I can have my food ‘hot’ there now is to ask for a dish of their hot chili paste on the side to add in myself! – Ridiculous! – Plus their prices have gone up too much; I’m not even sure the place is owned by the same people of past decades now – probably not. – They also have some ‘fortune cookies’ now with some local attorney’s ad printed on the back – and your “fortune” says something like how help from the right ‘advisor’ will help you through the difficulties in life! Each of our party of 3’s ‘fortunes’ were like that a few days ago – what a riot!

I was hired to photograph just a few of this restaurant dishes. I learned they have been operating for over 30+ years as a family business. Mrs. Lin who is an owner has told me that she remembers serving children who are now parents and she is NOW serving their children. Talk about full circle. Their food is authentic and delicious.
I had tasted the happy family reunion and the walnut shrimp. SO GOOD!!!
The general tso chicken at most chinese restaurants is deep fried. Not here. It is not deep fried and it is so good and just enough spice. Such a delight.
This place is busy with carry outs during the pandemic and I see why. It is because they are truly authentic and care about what comes out of the kitchen. I highly recommend this place. Also check out their Coomer location too. 14 and Haggerty.

The most absolutely disgusting meal I have ever ordered chicken should not be crunchy and chewy and taste like it’s five days old and they didn’t even have the decency to include a fork and spoon for my order. I’ve been better off eating cat Food I will never order from this place again it was absolutely disgusting. 100% disappointing if I want to order oriental food apparently I have to buy it from somewhere commercial because this family owned business seems to put garbage in people’s orders.

Ordered the Orange Chicken and General Tso. There was no heat (ordered medium) no flavor (except a strange almost fishy after taste which was probably burnt oil) and was way over cooked (chewy and so bad). Waste of $30. Terrible terrible quality, and we were the only ones there!! How could they mess it up that badly with literally nothing else to do???

Blog, blogging and updated blogger ✨️. Googlers new pics for you all. I was out in about shopping for family members ❤️ and they wanted Chinese food. Good service and nice people working ♀️ here. …. ……. They wanted sweet and sour chicken with sauce on the side. I had to do a pickup order because they didn’t have a,curbside. Same thing I guess or not? Ordered it, pick it up, and drove it to our family visit. The restaurant inside was clean and organized . Check ✔️ it out!
