100/10 experience! The last time I had a pasta dish this delicious, I was in Europe! The food was amazing, and the portion sizes were generous. They were so kind to let us “create” our own meal from the daily special and the lamb dish on the menu – THANK YOU!! The atmosphere is relaxed yet bougie. The decor here is so pretty!

NOTE: There are some reviews about how small the menu is. From my experience, small menus are always a good indicator that someone is back there making fresh meals instead of frozen meals being heated and served!

We will be back.

Sweet Basil is one of those places that reminds you: never judge a restaurant by its cover.

From the outside, you’re not expecting Italian—honestly, it feels more Indonesian-inspired, quirky, and a little mysterious. Definitely not your typical Italian spot. But then you sit down… and wow.

The pesto on focaccia arrives and suddenly everything makes sense. Fresh, vibrant, and dangerously addictive. The olive bread? Finger-licking good—yes, I said it. Don’t fight it.

The bolognese was perfectly al dente, with a rich, beautifully balanced sauce that tastes like it’s been simmering with love (and patience). Exactly how it should be done.

The Caesar salad was just okay for me—not bad, just not the star of the show. But then came the wine, and let me tell you: you must order it. Absolute perfection with the food and the vibe.

This place is a hidden gem—the kind you almost want to keep to yourself, but can’t because it’s that good. Unexpected, charming, and delicious.

Yes, I’ll be back. Soon. ✨

I can’t imagine how I’ve never been to this place before – it’s quite large and impossibly pretty, with a tight menu of creative modern Italian dishes and excellent service. Equally important, the prices are moderate in a time when other restaurants have become unaffordable. A friend ordered the double brined pork chop on a bed of barley risotto and it was breathtaking, and my grey sole on pureed squash was offered as a special which was perfectly delicate with a touch of sweetness. The cocktails sounded a little excessively sweet but were executed with balance and subtlety that I don’t see often. Highly recommended.

Our new favorite restaurant. We made reservations for New Years Eve at Sweet Basil and was not disappointed. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. We could see the team effort as our server and other staff members would check in several times if there was anything we needed. The owner, David, also greeted us and checked in, and we had some laughs together.
The food was A++++. The flavor and main entrees were great. I highly recommend the bone-in pork chop with risotto. The chop was juicy and cooked perfectly. My wife got the rosemary chicken and was equally flavorful and cooked perfectly. We also got the eggplant caponata that was so flavorful as well.
The decor was warm, like we were in a home with warm lighting and comfortables seating. We noticed how each table had different styles that added to the warm feeling during out visit.
We also got the Sweet Basil cookbook but will certainly be back as regulars as we can’t duplicate the experience we had there at home.
A+++++++ all around.

I love Sweet Basil. Whenever I’m in Waltham for work, I stop in. The food is always great if a little oily for my taste, and the portions are very generous. My current favorite is either the lamb shank (sadly the salmon they used to have is only available as a special and not consistently offered).
Ambiance is eccentric. Background music, dim lights, and an artful array of furnishings. My favorite table has all the faux cow hide covers.
The star is their selection of cocktails. Their bartender is artsy and personable. Many of the cocktails themselves are carefully crafted variations on traditional cocktails. The last one I had, when figs fly, was a light rum cider with fig. Beautifully executed.

We had a great experience dining here!
Food was very delicious! We got the Baked Gouda, which came baked inside a puff pastry and on top of salad – it was so good and perfectly crispy! For our entrees, my husband had the lamb shank and I got the rosemary chicken pasta dish. The pasta was maybe slightly on the salty side for my personal liking but the texture was perfectly al dente and the lamb was fall off the bone good.

We enjoyed our cocktails as well!

We were most impressed by the service – our waitress brought us a plate of arancini and a lemon cake on the house, which was really unexpected and very nice of them!

Overall, we enjoyed our time here and will be back to try the other dishes.

I’ve dined at this location and the one in Needham several times. We were lucky to catch a live reggae band during our visit, which made the evening even more enjoyable. When the band was playing it was loud but before it was an enjoyable atmosphere. The wait staff was incredibly patient with our table as we spent time catching up. That night, the chef was a bit heavy-handed with the salt, so while my meal was good, it wasn’t quite as exceptional as I’ve come to expect. Still, I definitely recommend this place and look forward to returning. Forgot to mention the bread service, the pesto and bread were delicious.

Went on a Saturday evening and there was no wait. The aesthetic of the restaurant was calm and intimate. Service was amazing, and our waiter was attentive to all of our requests. The food itself was awesome, great portion sizes with the gnocchi being my favorite. The ravioli was also pretty good, and the calamari was solid. Bread with pesto is a great app too. All in all I felt the price I paid reflected the quality and experience I had.

A superb restaurant! It needs a Michelin star!

Service was accomadating, friendly, and fast. Every dish we ordered, across the range of the menu from appetizers, to salads, to cocktails & mocktails, to entrées were perfection. I might sound hyperbolic, but I have dined all over the world and found this experience to be warm and wonderful – when I return to Massachusetts, I will return here. ♥️

Also, the chef, Dave, came out personally and wished my mother a happy birthday and autographed a cookbook for her! Great experience.

Dined at Sweet Basil restaurant on Moody Street . We came in because of the great reviews and we’re wowed with the internal design and architecture. We began with the bread and pesto which I recommend to request warm bread. My co worker ordered the octopus and I tried chicken Parm over spaghetti . Both dishes were delicious but the octopus was the better .
Fantastic service and conversation by our server Karen. Thank you for a memorable dinner!!!
