Reviews
Service: Servers are very friendly, they explain the menu making sure you understand about the daily special. They check on you periodically, didn’t feel like you are being watched. The sushi chefs took the time to introduce every piece of sushi, it is just like taking me back to Japan.
Atmosphere: I almost greet to the sculpture that has open arms and a great smile by the entrance The interior design is nice and simple, reminds me of Japan. The restaurant was well lit and clean. I’m just happy to see all the sushi chefs were Japanese
We started with the baked roll topped with spicy sauce, which had just the right amount of heat without overwhelming the taste of the fish. The nigiri platter was a highlight–melt-in-your-mouth tuna, perfectly seasoned, and cut to the right thickness. The salmon sushi was buttery, fresh, and some of the best I’ve had in a while. We also ordered a plate of sashimi, and you could really taste the quality–each slice was fresh, clean, and satisfying.
Beyond the food, the service was attentive but not overbearing, and the presentation of each dish made the experience feel a little extra special.
Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for top-notch sushi with a welcoming vibe. I’ll definitely be coming back!
They don’t have a liquor license but that’s totally fine by me. I just want my sushi.
I came at an off-time, at around 2:30 on Saturday (30 minutes before they close at 3pm to re-open at 5pm) and did not have to wait to be seated. The parking can be quite harrowing, but that’s LA Koreatown for you. I fervently hope this place opens a branch in Orange County (please! The demand is there!)
As expected coming from the “Tuna King” himself, the blue fin tuna is king at Sushi Zanmai and it’s offered in every style imaginable. Other highlights from order included the Red Shrimp Amaebi, Hokkaido Uni, Chirashi Bowl and Miso Green Beans.
Ordering from an iPad may seem like a lack of service quality, however all the servers were extremely attentive, polite and willing to make conversation.
I knocked atmosphere down to 4 stars because the ambiance is super casual. This is not a place to have an anniversary meal or fancy date night, but a casual (and delicious) dinner or lunch… no frills attached!
On a personal note, I ate at Sushi Zanmai in 2016 at Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo and it was a delight to dine here again. Thanks Sushi Zanmai!
Simple, straight forward, fresh, and of course: authentic.
Tuna Zanmai $42 10 piece tuna set (not pictured, this set also comes with salad and miso soup)
Salmon Trio $8
Jumbo Sea Eel Nigiri $10
I stopped by right at noon and the place was pretty empty so I took a seat at the counter. There is waitstaff but you place your order on a tablet. Of course both waitstaff and chef are still present and available to help, check in, clear your table, etc.
All the fish was cut well, fresh, and delicious. The rice was consistent and well made, slightly warm for a good bite.
The jumbo eel was so soft and delicious. I was worried how I would eat it but it cut easily when biting it or using my chopsticks to tear off a piece.
Salmon was delicious across the board.
And the tuna. Each cut was amazing, just like what I got at Sushi Zanmai in Tokyo. My favorites being the Chu toro and Negi toro.
What made the experience even better was definitely the staff. Host, hostess, waitress, and the chefs are all so incredibly kind, friendly, and helpful. They love chatting with you especially if you’ve been to Japan and/or Zanmai in Japan.
I appreciate the focus on nigiri and more traditional Sushi plates so this will definitely be a place I return.
