Came because Sushi Umi was nearby and had great reviews — and wow, it did not disappoint. My experience wasn’t just good, it was amazing. I was genuinely blown away by the quality of the fish, the attention to detail, and the presentation of every dish.

If you’re a sushi lover anywhere in the NOVA area, Sushi Umi is an absolute must-try. I’ll definitely be coming back.

One of the best sushi restaurants in Northern Virginia. I have visited this restaurant three times and every time I have been impressed with the food, display and atmosphere. They have options to purchase mixed rolls for two, three and four people and it is the best to just try a wide variety of rolls. Each roll is made with unique flavors it is like an explosion of flavors. Absolutely recommend this restaurant.

It was a late lunch and my first visit, so I tried their Omikase box. A little disappointed that two items were tempura, a horse mackerel (very interesting and tasty, but would’ve preferred as sashimi or nigiri) and the other was oyster, which I usually like but didn’t care for the preparation on this.

The other 4 items in the box were far better, topped with a decadent Toro belly. It wasn’t a ton of food, but probably enough for most lunch eaters. They charge for hot tea. About $50 for the meal.

As for vibe, decor was nice enough, clean and modern, Asian low-key music playing. Disappointing sushi prep bar, as it is solid, keeping you from seeing the meat or the preparation. I always prefer to watch the masters at work. Presentation was beautiful and hostess was delightful.

The ambience was really nice, it’s a very intimate place w tall booths and mood lighting great for a date; I love how they decorated with Christmas trees. The restrooms were also spacious and very clean. I picked this place because it’s the only sushi place in the area I could find with chicken katsu sushi, which was good. The yam roll was ok; it lacked the usual sweetness. The DreamRoll (deep fried avocado roll w cream cheese) was delicious. Unfortunately, it took over 30 min for us to get our food after seating and there were only about five other small parties.

Pleasant experience here – the ramen was incredible and had lots of delicious mushrooms and toppings. Would get again! Friends enjoyed their sushi and sake also.

Uploading menu photos I couldn’t easily find before arrival – drinks and a la carte sushi with prices July 2025.

The service was kind and quick. The ambiance was relaxing and quiet. The nigiri and sashimi were fresh and delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. I was very pleasantly surprised with how delicious the food was. My 10 year old son loved this experience and agreed that the food was delicious.

I did not think highly of this place was because its appetizer menu set up a lower pitch for the meal than it should be, even if the aaaammmmaaaazzzzing, Michelin star potential main entry sushi couldn’t had changed this first impression, which made the final price for the whole meal looked unreasonable. In another word, the appetizer menu did not pair with the entry menu.

This restaurant is featured with really good atmosphere. It is a brand new restaurant, thus its wood plates are new, its glass cabinets in the sushi bar do not have scratches or fog, which looked pretty detergent to me. It does not have a lot of customers so it is quiet. It’s a good place to escape from the reality.

I ordered a regular sushi combination, which came with 8 pieces of fish/shrimp sushi and 6 pieces of spicy tuna roll. The sushi is out of expectation delicious. The fish is fresh and flavorful. The rice is perfect in sourness, size and density. The wasabi they used come from real wasabi plants instead of the cheaper substitution. However the spicy tuna roll is way too spicy for me. I dont think other Japanese restaurants in NOVA would provide such spicy tuna rolls. Usually sushi restaurants do not pair regular sushi combination with [spicy] tuna roll. I couldn’t help wondering why this restaurant do it this way. Are they trying to hide the fish quality in the tuna roll with the extra hot flavor?

I did not order the appetizer since from talking to the manager I believe that their appetizers are made from frozen products. Those frozen products could be in-house made or delivered from a central factory. I have this belief since the manager told me that the vegetables in the Umi tampra are all mixed together and cannot be changed. The only reason I can think of for this is that the are pre-made and frozen together. It can be defrosted only when it is in the fryer.

It is a very common practice for restaurants to use frozen products, but I just don’t want to have them in a expansive Japanese restaurant. Frozen foods are boring because they are very standrized. I would feel like I’m a idiot if I pay such a high price for some factory foods.

At the end of meal I paid 77 dollars(including tax and tip), I added 2 pairs of tuna shshi other than the sushi combination. Sode here cannot be refilled. This is more expansive than I thought it would be. This price is not the expectation for me go to a restaurant in the WorldGate Plaza. Herndon is not as fancy as Reston. This is more obvious during dinner hours.

A group of us decided to check this place out after hearing great reviews, and overall, we were pretty happy with the experience. The sushi was amazing, and the service was solid. I’d definitely recommend it! The only downside was that the portable table light was a bit dusty, which made me wonder about the overall cleanliness. Plus, the lighting was super dim, so it was hard to tell. Still, we had a good time!

We come here a lot because our son takes music lessons at the Bach to Rock. The staff is always friendly and the food is always delicious. We often bring our young daughter, and the staff even helps keep her entertained, lol. Highly recommend – great sushi, ramen, and shumai!
