Sushi Ukai, originally called Sushi House, had been purchased by the owner of Sushi House Group. The staff at Sushi House remained the same after the name was changed to Sushi Ukai. The word Ukai means a traditional method of catching small Japanese trout by manipulating seabirds. Sushi Ukai offers a sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese style of casual eating. From sushi, sashimi, classic sushi rolls, bento boxes, and cooked Japanese dishes, our menu is focused on pleasing our customers. This review is long overdue because we’ve been ordering from Sushi Ukai for quite some time now. We’ve dined in and also order takeout frequently, and they never disappoint. The sushi is always fresh and high quality. The super white tuna sushi/sashimi is especially amazing and my personal favorite. We usually get a mix of pieces and rolls and everything is consistently great. Even when there’s been an app ordering mix-up (on the app side or ours), they’ve always gone above and beyond to make it right, which we truly appreciate. Their customer service is top-notch. We’ve tried sushi all over the surrounding areas and this is still our favorite place to order from. Highly recommend!

I was super bummed as this restaurant is typically one of my favorites. We ordered takeout and love spicy tuna, but this was severely oxidized, smelled terrible— huge hit of stinky fish when you opened the container— & not fresh, and also was not the right texture—very sticky slimy. Much of our dinner was tuna, so we wasted a lot of money. My husband ate one piece & it was completely inedible.

I’m not sure how this has high ratings on Yelp and Google but this isn’t a 5 star restaurant. As an Asian reviewer, this place was very mid. The decor and ambience were all fine. I did see that they have outdoor dining. We ordered a dragon roll, dan dan noodles, and tonkotsu ramen noodle. I’m not going to go through every dish like I usually do. They’re all pretty much 2.5-3 out of 5. The broth in the ramen was bland and tasteless. Noodles were chewy. The dan dan noodles were also bland. The versions I had at other places are well seasoned. Dragon roll was just okay. Service was fine. I had a better experience at Shang Noodle down the street.

This is my FAVORITE restaurant. Not only is the food delicious but they treat everyone here like family. They provide you with a special experience each time and I’m so glad I found them. Hands down, best sushi restaurant around! Highly recommend

We order from Sushi Ukai whenever we have a sushi craving. Delivery is always quick and the food is good. Pickup has been an issue several times. The last two visits in particular we waited almost 30 minutes past the pick up time. The most recent order one roll was missing the chef sauce and the other gold flake. The food is good quality and the hot and sour soup is especially delicious but the inconsistency with pick up is becoming frustrating.

Being a vegetarian but sushi lover is hard. I also don’t get the high by having just avacado and cucumbers in my roll. I look out for signature vegetarian rolls. This place had an amazing shiitake roll ($6.95) and we go the Maya tofu dragon ($14.95) that was a bit sweet for me but good. My teen daughter said her Pink lady roll (shrimp$16.95) was very good. We loved the Fried Akadeshi tofu appetizer. Loved the clean space and attention of the staff.

Despite incredibly busy Friday evening with people waiting for a table and pick ups, the staff offers very patient, humble and no attitude service. You’d have to wait for your left dinner but it all worth it.

Simple with pleasant music playing inside and outdoors for patio guests.
Food:
Best sushi I had in Midwest by far. Perfect rice temperature. Taste buds are dancing from the flavor of the rolls we had with spicy tuna and spicy salmon. Miso soup is amazing. Rolls well rolled and easy to handle. The prices are so acceptable for the quality we had experienced. Almost surprisingly affordable.

This place is perfect for brunch with friends. We were in their special room that had carpets and doors. The atmosphere was very private and comfortable. It was an elevated experience for sure! Although be prepared to take off your shoes if you want to visit the special room! The staff was very nice and patient with us. She remembered all of our orders and was very kind when serving us.
