Reviews
Such a hidden gem that needs to be more known, your food is incredibly fresh and every detail was on point, and we will definitely come back.
(Yes, we have been to Noz, Sho, Icca bla bla bla).
From the moment you walk through the wine cellar to the hidden back room of Restaurant Suntory, you know it’s going to be something special.
Would definitely come back here again and highly recommend for everyone to come here.
Despite being served by the assistant chef (who was absolutely fantastic), the food was very, very good. But I realized that the food does not matter when you experience what we have experienced.
Our troubles started when the other party of 5 (Japanese tourists) started shrieking with laughter in the middle part our meal while conversing with the main chef. My girlfriend and I tried to shrug it off but as the meal progressed we could not hear each other and had to speak directly into each other’s ear. Mind you, the omakase room is small and intimate with low ceilings – about the size of a standard American master bedroom.
Despite mentioning the noise to the staff, nothing was done. The main chef never once acknowledged my girlfriend and I throughout our meal and continued to converse and entertain the other party of 5 in Japanese as if it were their private restaurant. They had absolutely no acknowledgement of our presence there. The noise worsened as the meal went on.
Towards the end of the meal the noise became unbearable. I had a headache and was looking forward to receiving the check. During our dessert, I could not take the shrieking laughter anymore and asked the staff for the check outside at the reception desk. The manager of the restaurant immediately understood the situation due to party’s loud screams, which could be heard from the outside of the restaurant, and apologized profusely.
I have never seen such an egregious lack of decorum at any restaurant in recent memory and it’s so unfortunate that it had to happen at one where a respectful atmosphere is crucial to the experience. The restaurant’s lack of empathy for me and my girlfriend during our meal made the experience a terrible one.
You surely will not get this type of experience at Sushi Sho at the Ritz Carlton Waikiki – and the late Maru Sushi (recently closed) also had an extremely respectful atmosphere.
My message to the head chef – we truly felt that the other party was given preferential treatment, for whatever reason, and our experience was trampled on at their expense. If you have travelled this far to share your masterful craft with customers abroad, what is the point of turning your back to American diners, and only serving and catering to Japanese tourists? What a shame!
