Sushi Sen-Nin

  4.3 – 247 reviews  $$$ • Japanese restaurant

Chef Matsu opened the first Sushi SEN-NIN on 34th St, NYC in 1997. He, along with his team, selectively choose, create, and present only the freshest and appetizing dishes within a modern Japanese ambiance. The authenticity of the sushi served can be seen in the unique variety of daily catches from Japan, USA, and international fish markets. Sushi Sen-nin is simple in presentation without all the gimmicks but true to the Japanese spirit and core and Matsu’s humble upbringing in the countryside of Toyokawa, allowing for a pure and raw appreciation for sushi and the Japanese cuisine.

Relaxed neighborhood eatery serving Japanese favorites like sushi rolls, sashimi & tempura.

Very nice and fresh sashimi, chirashi was excellent. Service was adequate. Not much of atmosphere. Very expensive though! It is rarely when I can see rainbow or dragon rolls for $45… Still no regrets, would like to be back.

Great omakase. Delicious. Attentive table service. Hot green tea was great as well. Highly recommend. Apologies for not having a pic of the spicy tuna hand roll which was the first service. I ate it before I could snap a pic. I guess I was hungrier than I thought I was .

This place was just okay. The rice was actually mushy and a mix of brown and white rice, which was a bummer. Veggie Dumplings tasted a bit off too. Not terrible, but they need to step it up. I’m going with a 2 out of 5. Interior was nice.

Been here twice and the food is consistently great. The fish tastes so fresh and high quality. It doesn’t taste overly gamey or rubbery. The Salmon Tartare appetizer was my favorite! Love the way it’s wrapped in thin avocado slices vs. thick chunks. The Lobster roll is my go to and the size of each piece / meat quantity is excellent. It’s a bit pricey, but definitely worth it.

Very nice in every regard. The wait staff was very helpful in our selections and the chef made us some of the most amazing Sushi we have had. The ambiance is of a very open atmosphere with a modern sax jazz music scene. Highly recommend!

It wouldn’t hurt to clean the room more often. Dirt, insects and bad smell. The staff does not wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Sushi Sen-Nin has been an NYC staple for over 20 years. The fish is always fresh. The service is fantastic. And the vibe inside is very unique and special. All of the rolls are fantastic. The tuna tacos and crispy rice are our favorite appetizers. Can’t go wrong here. There are many sushi restaurants in midtown Manhattan but Sushi Sen-Nin stands out among them all for all the best reasons.

Pretty decent sushi. The tomago was good. For the Philly roll they used a very thick cream cheese so the cheese taste was overpowering. And they just put a stick of imitation crab in the California roll (rather than chopped up) which I thought was odd. The takoyaki was also interesting and had 3 different sauces. Overall it’s pricey and has a strange ambience in the resturant (it’s this massive room with a poorly thought out layout) so I’m not sure I’d go back.

This place is one of the better spots in the neighborhood. Slightly pricier than most but you get what you pay for. I wish they were open on weekends.
