To be clear, the service was good, and the chefs did their job well. This is not a criticism of the staff or their effort. The issue is value specifically, how aggressively disconnected the pricing is from what actually arrives at the table. Portion sizes, execution, and overall satisfaction simply do not align with the cost.
I fully understand the realities of operating a restaurant today rent, staffing, overhead, all of it. But understanding those pressures does not excuse passing the burden onto customers in a way that feels misleading and frankly exploitative. At this price point, expectations are naturally high, and this experience failed to meet them in a meaningful way.
What’s most disappointing is that this didn’t need to happen. With more honest pricing or clearer positioning, the experience could have been acceptable. Instead, it left a strong sense of regret like paying a premium for an illusion.
I wanted to enjoy this place. I expected to. I left feeling taken advantage of. That’s not something a restaurant should ever make its guests feel.
During my visit, I indulged in the vegetable sushi roll, edamame, and their must-try Asian guacamole, which was a delightful surprise. I also enjoyed the miso soup and house salad-everything was fresh and flavorful.
What impressed me the most was their commitment to customizing dishes according to dietary preferences.
For instance, I was able to enjoy hibachi rice without any fish sauce, meat, or egg, and the vegetable yaki udon was simply delicious.
The attentive staff made sure I had exactly what I wanted, enhancing my dining experience. Whether you’re a sushi lover or looking for great vegetarian options, I highly recommend Sushi Lounge in Hoboken
—it’s a place worth visiting!
I don’t write reviews often, but as someone who used to work in the restaurant industry, I know exactly how a service should run and what quality control looks like and Sushi Lounge failed on every single level.
First, let’s talk about the bar. I ordered an Espresso Martini a staple cocktail that isn’t hard to make. What I received was a white, milky, vanilla flavored drink with three espresso beans floating on top. It was insulting. There was clearly no espresso and likely no actual coffee liqueur in it. If you’re going to charge premium cocktail prices, you don’t serve a glass of flavored milk and call it a martini. It showed a complete lack of knowledge and care behind the bar.
Then came the food. The restaurant was completely empty, so there was no excuse for a lack of attention to detail, yet the food we received was mediocre at best and offensive at worst. I know how food costing works, and the portion sizes here are a total rip off. We were extremely overcharged for tiny plates that didn’t even come close to matching the price point.
But the real deal-breaker was the aftermath. Almost immediately after finishing that mystery ‘martini’ and the food, I started having severe stomach pains and the urge to throw up. Nothing ruins an anniversary faster than getting food poisoning from a place that wasn’t even busy.
The server was friendly enough (though not very attentive considering we were the only table), but a smile doesn’t make up for incompetent bartending, terrible value, and making your customers physically ill. We walked in wanting to celebrate a special day and walked out feeling ripped off and sick. We absolutely will not be back.
My girl is allergic to fish roe, but there was no mention of it on the menu. She almost ate it, and when we asked the server, they insisted there wasn’t any. We had to literally point it out for them to finally check with the chef and confirm it. They made a new roll, but that took another 30 minutes. You’d think they would prioritize it, but that didn’t happen.
The service was just as bad. No water refills, no check-ins, nothing. We had to get up and go to the counter every single time we needed something.
To top it off, the sushi wasn’t even good. The quality was below average, definitely not worth the wait.
Firstly our bartender, Alyssa her name was- was one of the absolute worst, most inattentive servers we ever had. First she got our orders wrong, and the cocktails we got were not pleasant at all. She seemed to be having trouble managing the bar. We hardly got any water refills, any check-ins, nothing. She payed a lot more attention to the other 3-4 males at the bar, then me and my husband. She clearly seemed to like the attention from them more because they lowkey flirt with her. It was weird She came off very standoffish & dismissive as well when we would ask for things. The rest of the staff were also pretty rude and seemed more concerned talking to each other rather than paying any attention to customers. The staff also visibly drank and took shots heavily during actual service, especially our bartender Alyssa. It’s no wonder our service was lacking that night. This place has a complete lack of service and professionalism
The food was also absolutely abysmal. The sushi was some of the worst I’ve had in the area. Small portions and completely over priced. The wings were some of the most dry wings we ever had
I would rate this place 0 stars if I could. I cannot stress this enough, please do not come here! Trust me, You will regret it!!
It looks pretty modern inside regarding the decor. They do have a full bar and they did have some drink specials going while that we were there.
