Our experience at Sushi Kai would be best described as a little confused but got the spirit. We went for their opening month special and started with the free spring rolls which were very good. We then ordered 2 california rolls, katsu chicken, and general tsos chicken. The California rolls and seemingly all of the sushi came with silly paper animal figures. Honestly cute and made us smile. At the same time as the sushi the general tsos chicken was brought but not the katsu, after a couple minutes a waitress came over and let us know that it hadn’t been plated well but they would bring it out and then bring us a second better one as well. Neither plate came with the rice, the poorly plated one was drastically more chicken, and they had completely different lettuce garnishes under the chicken. Overall the food was really good though so we decided to order some desert to go. We order fried cheesecake to go right before paying and it takes 10 minutes for it to come out to us. We leave and decide to open up the desert and realize it has been tempura fried. Not sure what we were expecting but it wasn’t that. Overall the food was good, the portions were good, the service was a little clumsy but good. If you’re thinking about visiting I would definitely recommend but maybe give them a couple weeks to get settled into a proper routine

I recently had the opportunity to try Sushi Kai in Denton, and here’s my breakdown:
Food – 5/5
I ordered several different rolls and even customized one just to see how it would turn out. The fish was extremely fresh and tasted excellent. The rice was cooked perfectly — and as a bit of a rice snob, I believe that’s the absolute key to good sushi. It had great texture and wasn’t over- or undercooked.
Most rolls were assembled very well (9/10 overall). A couple didn’t seal completely, but the majority were spot-on. I also appreciated that the rolls weren’t overloaded with sauces to hide poor fish quality. The tables around me seemed to be enjoying their meals too. So far, this is the best sushi I’ve had in the Denton area, and I’ve tried most of them. Presentation was also excellent.
Service – 5/5
I was greeted promptly and seated right away. Staff checked on me multiple times, even team members who weren’t my primary server. I’ve noticed some reviews docking points because the restaurant was busy, but for sushi that’s actually a good sign — high turnover usually means fresher fish. A busy sushi restaurant is exactly what you want to see.
Atmosphere – 4/5
The dining area was clean and had a bit of a diner-style feel, with comfortable booth seating. While I personally care more about the food than the atmosphere, Sushi Kai delivers on both. It’s a place you could come with family or for a casual date. The location next to Target is also convenient.
Suggestions for Improvement:
I’d love to see a bit more Japanese authenticity in the décor. The bathrooms weren’t dirty, but they could be cleaned a bit more frequently. I’d also recommend removing the cloth drapes leading to the restrooms — they didn’t look especially clean, and it’s not ideal to touch fabric when leaving the bathroom.
Overall – 5/5
Let’s support this business and keep them busy. Good sushi can be hard to find in Denton, and this place deserves to stick around.

First time in today and you best believe we will be returning. Service was prompt and courteous. They seated us and after ask I ng for drinks food started coming. Food was excellent, Sake was hot and great! Atmosphere was very nice and calming. It was a packed house when we left but still was able to hold conversation. If you haven’t tried them out, you must!

Tried this place for lunch for the first time and was not disappointed! There is so much variety on what they offer, and they have multiple lunch special options, making this an ideal lunch stop. Service was quick and efficient, and the food was delicious. I ordered the fried crab jalapeño bites, a Philadelphia roll, and their lunch salmon hibachi. They also gave me this cute little keychain! Pictures attached to this post. Will definitely be returning in the future.

We went to lunch at Sushi Kai today and it was amazing! Such a nice and cozy atmosphere with amazing food and service. The waitresses were so sweet and kind. We got the plum wine, Chicken Katsu bento box, Cajun and Philadelphia sushi roll. If you love cream cheese in your sushi they put a nice block in the sushi and I love cream cheese so it was perfect. The fried rice was amazing. I don’t have one bad thing to say about the food. The price was amazing for what we got, making it affordable. We also got a coupon AND the CUTEST key chain!!! 10/10 recommended.

My wife and I brought my friend here to catch up and try a new place. We loved it!! The staff was very friendly and accommodating to wife’s allergy needs (avocado and gluten). We started with complimentary beef onion soup. We also ordered the spicy Kani salad as an appetizer. For our entrees my wife and I ordered the sushi & sashimi combo platter (front) which was absolutely amazing. It could easily be shared by 3 or 4 people. My friend, he got the Ichiban roll (back). The portion sizes for the price were very impressive. We went for lunch on a Saturday around noon. Not that busy. It is a smaller place, so it could get packed quickly or be difficult for larger parties (5+), but we were well attended to during our dining experience. We will certainly be back!
We spent $20-30 per person, but you could easily share a dish and spend less than $10 per person and be satisfied.

shrimp tempura was frozen or tasted like it .. not fresh and made in house
sashimi salad was great except for the part where they used iceberg lettuce and traditionally its supposed to come with greens and some of the fish cuts were inconsistent (see i heart sushi sashimi salad for refrence)
my fire work roll was ok the rice was a bit soaked with the ponzu sauce but way can you do .
the amazing roll was just too overpowered with mango and had that frozen shrimp tempura in it felt cheap
salmon avocado hand roll was great
white tuna sushi (escolar) found hair on it but im not too particular on that see photo for refrence .. sushi was good .
SERVICE 4/5 it took a bit to get rolls to us but we also ordered late
PRICE 4/5 rolls and alot of things were priced great until you got to some of the expensive hibachi dishes
overall if you like atmosphere and cheap price with great staff come here .. but the food needs a little work feels cheap .. or just not executed properly .. imo shrimp tempura should be made in house never frozen especialy if you use it in your special rolls.. the tempura tasted old and mushy ..

The sushi was delicious and our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Our food came out fast and everything was just like we ordered. I went during a busy time but they managed to seat us quickly. Even though it was busy everything went smooth.

I got the chicken katsu bento for take out and loved it! It also came with a sauce that was really good. Prices are good for the portions you get. They were very busy on a Friday night, but my order was ready pretty quickly. Will definitely be coming back.
