Cons: we were left disappointed overall
1. Knowledge of menu: I asked our server about the volcano roll as a cooked option, specifically if he could clarify what ingredients it contained as my recollection was that it included crab, avocado etc. since recent changes require some adjustments to my diet and no cross contamination of certain ingredients, which I also mentioned to our server.
Our server noted the above and said the volcano roll consisted of a spicy tuna – I paused and looked at the menu and saw that it had an asterisk indicating cooked beside the volcano roll and most if our experience with spicy tuna has been typically served raw.
Our server appeared a little flustered and really seemed to be trying to recall the difference between the two rolls. I even tried to give the server an opportunity to clarify if he was certain the volcano roll was more of a spicy tuna roll even mentioning the asterisk. To his credit, the menu listed the ingredients for some items but not all, including the volcano roll which is why i asked for clarification. Nevertheless, I went on to ask about other cooked options. Placed an order for a pork chashu noodle and asked our server for more time to decide on the roll.
When our server returned I ordered the Ebi Ten to be on the safe side and I really enjoyed it.
2. Food presentation: I have attached two pictures showing before and after for reference. We received the pork chashu before the Ebi Ten which was great. However when we received the bowl the pork was very well done to near charred and the egg a perfect hard boil. I did take a sip of the soup and flavour was lovely but I was unable to bite into the pork. We asked our server if we could have the pork redone and a medium boiled egg preferably. Our server was truly understanding and apologetic.
Our server returned and advised that the egg could not be made “runny”. We explained that we weren’t requesting a runny egg but medium boiled. However, I ended up just asking that they remove the egg from the dish since it couldn’t be accomplished.
Our server went back to the kitchen and returned with our soup. The pork looked much better and soup had no egg as agreed.
However, he explained/suggested that the kitchen could make/offer a sunny side up on the side to go along with the noodles which I appreciate in some way but also declined. I really just wanted a medium boiled marinated egg instead of hard boiled. So I was a bit confused as to what was communicated to the kitchen initially.
Finally, we hadn’t used our knives/forks since sitting and had only been using our chopsticks – see picture 1 for reference. When my noodles came back there was a fork in it – whose fork? We don’t know. What had it been in contact with? We don’t know. Thats when we decided to end the evening at Sushi House.
Unfortunately i asked the server for containers to go and should have just asked that it be removed from our bill & ofc we did not consume the soup so that was a waste.
Rating & Recommendation:
Overall, we gave it a 5/10 . The person who greeted us (also learnt she was the manager) was very warm & welcoming. Our server was apologetic and personable. However, it’s ok to say something along the lines of “im not sure, let me clarify with the kitchen and get back to you” when you are uncertain about menu items. We would also recommend improvement in staff’s knowledge of menu items and more care in food handling
No reservations for dinner but only had to wait 15mins.
Food came out quickly. Had shrimp tempura and crab rangoons for the appetizers and they were brought out before sushi, quickly too!
