Sushi by Scratch Restaurants: Cedar Creek

  4.7 – 104 reviews   • Japanese restaurant

Social Profile:

This eatery from Chefs/owners Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee is no ordinary omakase spot. The nigiri are not just supremely finessed but also infused with original touches—like the dab of sweet corn “pudding” and sourdough breadcrumbs that coat slices of hamachi. Even traditional pairings become transcendent with his house-fermented soy sauce. The iconoclastic vibe extends to the beverages, including cocktails, sake, and beer. Despite such originality, this bar does indeed adhere strictly to one tradition: a mini counter with seating for just ten to ensure a deeply personalized experience. Your time here is bound to pass in a blissful haze of convivial chatter. – The Michelin Guide

Visiting friends in Austin, they insisted on taking me here for an omakase experience and I’m so glad they did! Sushi is my ultimate favorite food, so after reading countless glowing reviews, I was beyond excited to finally experience Sushi by Scratch for myself. My friend booked this about a month in advance and thoughtfully noted my dietary restrictions. There was Wagyu on the menu, which they seamlessly substituted for me without hesitation, and they also accommodated my pineapple allergy with zero issues. The attention to detail started well before the first bite.

Guests are invited to arrive about 30 minutes early to complete check-in and participate in the pre-omakase ritual. After checking in, we were seated in the waiting area and served a refreshing non-alcoholic ginger beverage, followed by canape service. We were given 2 beautifully prepared bites as we waited to transition into the full experience. It set the tone perfectly.

Once guided into the omakase room, we were greeted with a handwritten wooden name plaque at our seat, a small but thoughtful touch that immediately made the evening feel personal. With only a 10-seat counter, the experience is incredibly intimate. The chefs introduced themselves, and we were presented with the beverage options. Two of us opted for the Japanese whisky pairing, while another chose the sake pairing, both excellent complements to the meal.

Before the first piece even hit the counter, the chefs revealed the night’s journey on the wall: 16 wooden plaques, each hand-lettered with the names of pristine fish and indulgent bites. It reads like a quiet flex on hamachi, madai, akami, toro, A5 wagyu where each course waiting its turn. It’s a reminder that omakase isn’t about choice but about surrender.

One detail that truly stood out was how effortlessly accommodating they were. When my dietary restriction came up again, the Wagyu substitution was handled with no hesitation, no awkwardness—just a seamless adjustment that still felt intentional and indulgent.

Throughout the meal, the chefs chatted with us as they prepared each course, explaining the fish, techniques, and flavor profiles. The interaction felt warm and natural, and the intimate setting made it easy to connect not only with the chefs but also with the guests seated next to us.

Overall, this was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend Sushi by Scratch to anyone who truly loves omakase. I’m already thinking about doing this again next time at their LA location when I get back home.

This was truly the best sushi experience of my life! We also did the sake pairing which perfectly matched the sushi. The chefs were so friendly and knowledgeable. The intimate environment even made it comfortable to engage with the other diners around the table. Everything about it was really special for us!

When they say this a sushi experience, they aren’t lying. This was an adventure in taste, texture and knowledge. Each bite we thought it couldn’t get any better, then it did. 16 times! Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable staff, great drinks and intimate setting. They all wished us happy anniversary to make our outing even more special. There was only 6 out of the 10 available seats at our reservation time making even more intimate. Highly recommend for something over the top different.

My son brought us here to celebrate his mom’s birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. The intimate atmosphere, the talented chefs, and the expert bartender all contributed to a top-notch evening. Each of the 16 sushi courses was a unique experience in itself. If you’re ever in the Austin area, I highly recommend seeking this place out—it’s a must-try!

Worth the drive! Overall from start to finish this is a fantastic culinary experience.

Each bite is carefully curated to show off high quality fish and local ingredients. While I am no sushi expert, this experience seemed to me to be the perfect mingling of Japanese omakase sushi blended respectfully with Texas flair.

One of the reasons my experience was so great is that all of the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating for those with dietary restrictions.
For every bite it was explained in great detail what we were eating, how to best enjoy it, why it was being matched with a certain drink, and even secrets on its preparation. Overall well worth it!

Very expensive ($700+ for 2 people) Omakase Sushi. 16 courses plus drinks with extras offered, with charge, at the end of the dinner.

Incredible experience for very special occasions. Sushi was top quality.

Thankful for Joe Rogan to sponsor and rent the space for this group of chefs as they establish permanent locations across the country.

It was an amazing experience; the food was great, and the chefs were super friendly.

I think they are a tad bit pricey and all of their omakase is nigiri, you don’t get a variety as you do with Uchi, Soto, or Otoko…the variety usually includes a hardy dishes which makes it more filling.

We also order extra couple of bites after the omakase and one of them was fishy, which led to a disappointing ending.

Sushi by Scratch is a beautiful representation of food artistry by talented chefs. Each chef has spent years crafting and perfecting their technique. There were a total of 16 bites with the option for a sake/alcohol pairing. Every pour was filled to the brim to represent abundance – be careful not to spill! I didn’t think I was going to make it through the 16 bites and the alcohol, but somehow I persevered and even had the tiniest bit of room left to add two more bites when it was offered at the end. The team was very personable and tried to invite conversation within the group.Perfect date night to celebrate an event or just because you deserve amazing sushi.
