Intimate Omakase that seats only 6 people at a time. We had a hard time finding the entrance as it took us straight to Restaurant Aki. Entrance is the black door immediately to your left when you step in.
Chef Shoichi, his assistant Kayo, and the server Eddie (not sure if I spelled their names correctly) was very impressive and hospitable. They even texted us a day after to wish us well for our stay! Very kindhearted!
We had the 21 course omakase and was given a choice to select our most favorite out of the sushis for a 22nd piece! We also ordered a sake flight as well as Asahi beer for a sake bomb lol.
There is a PAID parking lot with plenty of parking if you can find a space.
I would highly recommend if you’re in town. Their menu changes every month and depending on the season so make sure to check them out!
They offer 2 omakase options – 19-piece omakase and 21-piece omakase. I opted for the 19-piece omakase, which offered a delightful variety of fresh and high-quality sushi. The pace was quite fast, which worked perfectly for me as I had a flight to catch.
One unique aspect of dining experience at Sushi Aki is that not everyone in your group is required to participate in their omakase experience. If someone in your group wants to order from their a la carte menu, then that is totally fine too.
My 19-piece omakase included
1. Bluefin tuna and rock bream sashimi
2. Striped Jack sushi
3. Seared bonito
4. Flounder sushi
5. Salmon roe
6. Chilled corn soup
7. Rolled egg omlete
8. Seared scallop
9. Steamed egg with snor crab and shitake
10. Saltwater Eel and vegetable tempura
11. Seared vinegar cured mackerel
12. Black sea bream
13. Abalone in liver sauce
14. Chutoro
15. Sea Eel
16. Tuna skinny roll
17. Yellowtail
18. Seaweed miso soup
19. Dessert
The highlights for me were the sea eel, melt-in-your-mouth chutoro, mackerel, black sea bream, scallop, and the delicious chilled corn soup.
The 2 courses that fell short were the dessert and the abalone in liver sauce. The dessert was basically tangerine with tasteless jelly. And the abalone was a bit chewy.
Overall, the dining experience was great. The intimate setting allowed for interactions with other diners, adding to the charm of the restaurant. If you’re looking for a good sushi experience in Honolulu, Sushi Aki is definitely worth a visit.
