The huevos rancheros topped with lox and capers was an inspired combination—savory, briny, and vibrant, with each component complementing rather than overpowering the others. The tomato soup with habanero poured over goat cheese was equally impressive: a perfect interplay of heat, acidity, and creamy richness that elevated what could have been a simple starter into something memorable. And the spicy chicken served alongside French toast made from po’ boy bread was pure brilliance—sweet, savory, and spicy in just the right proportions.
Beyond the creativity, the fundamentals were spot on. Portions were generous without being excessive, allowing us to fully enjoy each dish without feeling overwhelmed. Even more impressive, the pricing was entirely reasonable for food of this originality and quality.
Surrey’s doesn’t just serve meals—it delivers inventive, well-composed dishes that demonstrate both culinary skill and imagination. We will absolutely be back.
I opted for the shrimp and grits as suggested and my brother went with the Bananas Foster that was suggested. I tasted his and it literally melted in my mouth. My shrimp and grits were delightful and extremely satisfying. My Sister had a crab omelette with avocado that she didn’t really enjoy, but she loved my entree so I shared as it was too much for me alone.
As stated, we were early and were able to be sat immediately. By the time we left, a crowd had gathered outside awaiting to get in. This place was worth the reputation the concierge, Ariel, told us about.
The pain perdu fell short of my expectations, however. I didn’t think it was anything special. Nor did I get any strawberries or anything else like I see in some of these pictures – just the toasted bread with powdered sugar on top and syrup on the side.
Charming atmosphere. I went at about 2:00pm on a Thursday and was seated right away. There’s construction currently transpiring on the block the restaurant is located on so expect some issues with parking if you’re driving.
The service was lovely. Definitely a good bunch of people.
Also, they don’t accept Amex.
I am not typically a shrimp & grits person, but this honestly may have been the most flavor I have had in a meal. The bacon added to it was just icing on the cake.
Paired with a very unique stuffed bananas foster French toast. It was one of the best variations of a bananas foster I have had and I may or may not have made an audible noise as I ate it. One of the servers walked by and just went “I heard that” not even realizing I had done it.
I couldn’t recommend this location enough. Come early to try and get a spot. If you find yourself on the waiting list, it is so worth sticking around to be seated. Plan on coming back every time I am back in New Orleans
