I really do not understand any hype this place seemingly gets. The food is beyond overpriced for the quality and sheer blandness of the food. We ordered 2 entrees (a burger and pasta), a soup, and a drink, and the bill came out to 71 dollars! The pasta was extremely watery and soulless. I would just hope for 70 bucks, I would be getting top-of-the-line food, but that is not the case. How hard is it to make food that tastes good? I honestly sat there thinking “I could see this being one of those restaurants on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares”… that is just how bad it all was. The service was also like pulling teeth, as our waiter literally avoided eye contact with us the entire time. You can only imagine how fun getting any kind of refills or basic service was for us throughout our overpriced visit. AND THE CHERRY ON TOP: One of us left throwing up the burger by the end of the night!! Which I also ask “how does one mess up possibly the simplest food item (aka, a burger)?” Overpriced, foul food, and also prone to give food-poisoning. Yeah, I’m not sure who is willingly keeping this place in business. Absolutely skip this restaurant unless you want to end your night with a tight pain in your chest, followed by vomiting your unreasonably overpriced hospital food-adjacent.

As a long time Surf Rider customer, the first time I went to the Kempsville location, I was disappointed. I didn’t think the food was as good as the old VB location and the service was slow. I didn’t go back until recently and it was a complete 180. The vibe was just like the old Surf Rider, but with a nicer building and location. The menu was the same as before and the food was fantastic! I’ll even go as far to say that it may even be better than the previous location. I got the fried shrimp and crab cake combo, which was excellent. What a great surprise and I’ll be back again soon.

I went to the Surf Rider on Shore Dr in Norfolk VA. Definitely wasn’t the greatest experience. My waiter (white mail) was cordial but not friendly AT ALL. However, he was attentive. It was more like “I’m waiting on your table ONLY because this is my area, not because I want to.” He looked at me as if I didn’t belong. He looked extremely surprised when I gave him a handsome TIP!!!
The atmosphere was stiff, somber, and not so necessarily welcoming. I’m a black woman and I love seafood, but I didn’t really enjoy my meal because I experienced an older white waitress who looked me square in the face….didn’t speak, didn’t crack a smile….not even a smirk…..said ABSOLUTELY NOTHINGGGGG, but kindly embraced and spoke to the white oeople who were sitting in the booth behind me and she was not servicing their table! At that moment I started to get up and leave but I was really hungry!!!
I did enjoy my seafood! The steamed shrimp were over cooked because they were hard and chewy but the fried oysters and shrimp were scrumptious!!
Not sure if I would like to visit that location again because they are definitely PREJUDICE in there!!! Geeeeesh!! They BLATANTLY showed it!!
Just put a sign on your front door that says, WHITES ONLY!”

Hidden Gem in Fairfield! Great place for date night. The food is fantastic. I always get the crab cakes and have never been disappointed. The fried Founder sandwich is also great! You will thank me!

Staff was excellent. Very attentive, kind and helpful. However, the Broiled Seafood Platter was overcooked quite a good deal. The fish was dry as well as the shrimp. Additionally, the price of almost $50 for said platter, does not reflect the NOT $50 of food we received, unfortunately.

Well worth the wait! We went tonight and we only had a 30 minute wait. Fresh and great tasting seafood. Large portions at a great price. We had the shrimp basket and you can easily share it. The side of broccoli is insanely large and the hollandaise sauce is a brilliant idea. The hushpuppies with the housemade honey butter were so good that we ordered an additional batch!

Horrible!!! $61 for two sandwhiches?!
That’s more than fair food and wasn’t even good. Online said $20 and $23 for sandwhiches (which already seems high) get a receipt for $61… that gets you a fried piece of fish, 1/2 a crab cake on a hot dog bun, and a crab cake sandwhich on a .50 burger bun..
Absolutely crazy, nothing was worth that, could have made it at home for $30 with van kamps fish and a $20 can of lump crab.
Questioned it and was shown the receipt that showed their horrid prices.

They have some good food and we are please to have this option in Kempsville. We had the steam shrimp which is actually very good.
They also gave us a mystery gift for January, so we plan to go back for that.

We chose Surf Rider to get comfort food in a clean environment. We ate fried shrimp and a steak sandwich. The shrimp was fresh, hot and tasty. The dipping sauce was perfect. The sandwich had big chunks of tender meat that was cooked to order. Even the iced tea was exceptionally good. Sharing these two dishes was perfect for the two of us. Our server hustled and was very efficient. It was a totally comfortable experience and a good value.
