Simply some of the best food I’ve ever had. Well balanced flavours in appealing combinations presented with just enough class to set it apart from the mundane. The atmosphere of the small restaurant is warm, feels almost communal, bustling yet the staff’s service felt personal.

We did the chef’s tasting menu which took us over their highlights. Everything was both unique and slowly savoured.

Add this to your next Portland trip.

Sur Lie isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience that lingers long after the last bite. The intimate bistro captures the essence of fine dining without any pretense.

The staff elevates the dining experience. They’re knowledgeable about the menu, attentive without being intrusive, and genuinely excited to share their recommendations. The owner in particular is very involved and makes sure both her staff and the guest are having a good time. It’s clear the whole team is invested in making sure every guest leaves happy.

The ingredients were fresh, everything was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were bold while maintaining balance.The tapas sized portions are perfect for sharing, letting you try more of the menu. We ordered 7 to start and ended up added 2 more because it was so good (sadly I didn’t photograph everything!)

Highly recommend sitting at the chefs counter! It was such a fun experience. The chef was really engaging. We’ll be back again in the future 🙂

I’m not sure why we waited so long to check this place out – the food was probably one of the best dinners we’ve had in Portland. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly, and immediately walked us through the menu – we tried 6 plates and every single one surpassed our expectations. The scallops were out of this world, and the cabbage salad was a close second. The chocolate cake easily sealed the deal on a perfect night out.

Besides the food, the service was so incredible. The plates came out brilliantly timed- enough time between serving so you could chat and enjoy yourself. The restaurant itself is beautiful and quiet – and really nicely decorated. The chef delivered our dessert and we commented how blown away we were with the whole experience. The chef chatted with us and was so friendly.

Don’t skip this place – we can’t wait to go back!

An incredibly wonderful evening. Not an over the top place but perfectly done for what it’s trying to be.
Sat at the bar and had 3 amazing dishes…beet salad-crab dip…potato gnocchi.
I worked in the restaurant and hotel business in Boston for years and this was some of the best food I’ve ever had.
The gnocchi were elegantly soft and fluffy …the crab dip was sort of a light fondue without the ritual.
The bartender, Bianca, was, quite frankly the best combination of knowledgeable/fast/ and perfectionist I’ve ever had. She was, additionally, easy to talk to for someone who was putting out a high volume of drinks that were never skimped in preparation.
The bar stock is thorough and unique enough to intrigue the most well travelled customer.
In a world of the overused “authentic” this is actually is.
I’ve been coming to Portland so long that I ate at Fore St the first month they were open.
Sur Lie is that same spirit of quality, innovation and skill that started the Portland food scene .

To start off they have the best desserts I have ever had. The parsnip cake and spruce ash ice cream were innovative and absolutely delicious. We got a spread of food and everything was amazing, but my favorite was the crudo. I wish I had a whole bucket of that. Would absolute recommend to anyone visiting or in Portland.
Plus they had a great selection of non alcoholic drinks as well which was a welcome sight.

Excellent food and friendly service with unique and inventive dishes. We made dinner reservations for a Saturday night and were seated when we arrived. The server was friendly and helpful and recommended 4-6 dishes for two people to share. The dishes were unique and came out as prepared and all very flavorful with quality ingredients. Some were a bit small for sharing but others were much larger and overall balanced out on value. The Lobster Popovers were very good but our favorite were two fall inspired dishes the roast acorn squash and mushroom gnocchi. We would definitely order all three again. Prices were reasonable considering flavors and quality however we skipped dessert as nothing on the menu interested us. A great place for dinner out.

What a delicious meal! From the moment you walk in the server greets you with a smile. The music was almost like low-fly, loud enough to enjoy but easy to talk and hear over. We started with cocktails which were so fine. Then a few dishes of yummyness. Dinner was spaced out just enough to make the meal flow but not feel rushed. Price was just right… super happy!

We had a awesome experience here for my wife’s birthday! Very nice atmosphere, great for a date night or out with friends. Excellent service- servers/staff were all incredibly friendly and chill. Happy hour even on the weekends! The cocktails were all very good. The food was on point- the popover and beef dishes were two favorites. Only two knocks were maybe that the next dish almost seemed to come out a little too fast (not necessarily a bad thing, but too fast for us), and a couple of the dishes had a little too much bitterness going on for our taste (the gnocchi and the compote with the cheesecake). But Sur Lie should be at the top of your list for places to try in Portland, especially if you like the tapas format!

Oh do we love a chefs menu in this house.

Amazing cocktails, great food with small shareable portions. The chefs menu was just perfect. It was an anniversary dinner and they went out of their way, which is always appreciated.

For the price, easy to rate this one 5-stars for the food quality and service. Meg, you are a rockstar.

We had an amazing dinner at Sur Lie. The drinks in particular were so unique and delicious, but the food was also incredible. We had the wild arugula salad, scallops, the popover, steak, and pasta, and it was all incredible. I think the popover and pasta were probably our favorites.

Our server was knowledgeable and easily answered any questions we had about the menu – highly recommend!
