I’ve been hearing about the burgers at Sunshine General Store for several years now, and yesterday’s drive home from Walter Reed finally gave me the perfect excuse to stop in and try it for myself.

Sometimes the best food is found in a true hole-in-the-wall — and this place fits the bill. First opened in 1947, Sunshine General Store is a beloved, no-frills American diner tucked away in Brookeville, Maryland. It’s the kind of place that feels unchanged in all the right ways.

I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger loaded with ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, and hot peppers. The photo doesn’t do it justice. The burger was packed with flavor, the bacon was cooked perfectly, and there was something about the hot pepper spread that gave it that extra kick. It’s the kind of flavor profile you’re still thinking about the next day — and probably won’t forget anytime soon.

No fries here, but I grabbed a Diet Coke (gotta watch the calories) and a bag of chips to round things out.

Was it the absolute best burger I’ve ever had? It was definitely up there towards the top of my list. But what made this experience special went far beyond the food. It was the friendliness of the cook, Robin. It was the conversation with Randy at the counter, who owns a local farm. It was finding out that Robin’s daughter works at the Honda dealership where I get my car serviced. And it was the unexpected bonus of Robin handing me a free cup of freshly made soup while I waited.

The burger was great. But the people — the stories, the conversations, the sense of community — are what made the experience unforgettable.

If you’re ever near Brookeville, do yourself a favor and stop by Sunshine General Store. You won’t be disappointed.

A short hop from several breweries and winerys. This is an excellent food option.

People love the burgers which are served up fresh when you order. They are also reasonably priced.

Be aware of the hours before heading out there… But a solid stop on your way out to some do the local spots.

Suggestion: just list the available toppings. The person helping us seemed pretty annoyed by having to list off the options. Everyone is used to 5 Guys these days. Let them look at the sheet and pick. No need for the snarky “whatever you want.”

Tell you what… How about shiitake mushrooms with gold foil? No. Don’t have have that? Then don’t answer with “whatever you want on it “

When I heard this place was voted as the Best Burger in Maryland, I was skeptical — but it really lived up to the title. Burger patties so fat they need their own zip code, and enough delicious sauces to make a Southerner cry. Get the burger, ask for everything, and be prepared to strike every single taste bud in your mouth. 10/10!

Finally made it out to try this much heralded burger and I wasn’t disappointed.

Far from the best burger I’ve had (I’ve had many across many cities and a few continents!), but it’s an excellent and simple burger.

There’s a robust, juicy patty that is perfectly grilled medium. They top it off with fresh lettuce, tomato and onions and there’s a thin and tasty and toasted sesame seed bun. Mustard, ketchup are options but I favored just having it with a generous amount of mayo and it was perfect.

I also got the steak and cheese to go and had it for dinner and it was solid as well. Definitely not a choice cut of ribeye or sirloin, this is a processed meat with the consistency of lamb gyro meat, but it’s salty and delicious. And again accented with lettuce, tomato and fried onions, and on a delicious toasted roll.

Service is friendly and polite, and they have a few tables and a few counter seats to eat inside.

Definitely a must stop if you’re passing by or in the area.

Having read about the burgers in various local media, I read the Google reviews and became excited to locate a potential quality burger place in MoCo. After the closing of many restaurants, it has become a necessity. So I have been searching and trying places for the last few weeks to no avail. My wife happened to be passing the area so she picked me up a burger. Please understand that there was about an hour between the time that the burger was cooked and I received it. Regardless, I doubt that the wait influenced the burger much beyond one issue that I will mention later. The burger patty itself was large and the beef was quality. With that said, it wasn’t seasoned well and the patty was cooked medium well but closer on the well done side. The patty was fairly dry, but you wouldn’t know as the amount of ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise on the burger was overwhelming. It was like a kid dressed the burger. I would recommend asking for it plain. So would the burger have been juicier if I ate it sooner? Probably. Would the flavor have changed? Unlikely. You can see the pictures. The bun could not even stay together with all the condiments. Of the three cheese options (Swiss, American, and provolone) I chose provolone. Regardless, as I said, all you could taste were the condiments. Honestly, I feel as if a number of the 5 star reviews are due to nostalgia more than flavor. Had I gone here when I was a child or if I lived in the area, I would probably have a different take on this burger. With all due respect, I won’t be going out of my way to get a burger here. With that said, I wish this small, family-owned business continued success. If you happen to be in the area and are craving a burger, give them a chance. Just don’t let them dress it for you. On the plus side, the cost is reasonable and I believe that the meat is locally sourced.

Their burgers are the best in town! Just make sure to get your burger medium if you want it medium or well done if you like it that way… The lady that normally answers phone needs to learn a thing or two about about customer service etiquette because she will mistreat you if she notices you are a foreigner. Other than that, this spot always has great price on fuel or gas and they’ve got preety much whatever else whatever you need inside the store. Again, just be nice to the lady at the front counter and she’ll be nice to you.

The diesel fuel pump runs a little slow.. which gives just enough time for you to stop inside and order one of their burgers – which are awesome!

Will definitely be back.

It’s a great place to get a burger! One of my all time favorites and I’ve had family members request I bring them some all the way to NE and FL.
They don’t serve fries, mainly just focus on burgers. Get the Bacon Cheeseburger with everything!!

I think I get why this place is so popular – I mean they do a crazy good business both in the tiny gas station shop and over the phone – it’s kind of quirky (the shelves are packed with drinks and chips and things to munch on with you food and then like one can of soup! ). It’s unique. It’s nostalgic.

My friend raves about the burgers here and I think burgers are so hard to rate – but if I were to be totally honest – the burger is straight average – every other burger is either above or below, solid 5: seasoned patty, plain grilled bun, standard fixings. Now he swears by the fried egg and onions but I just had lettuce tomato and pickles so maybe I just made the wrong choice ‍♀️ but yeah… Fun outing to Maryland for us, definitely unique and the people running it were wonderful, but I don’t need to go back.

I will say this though – you get a massive burger for the price and it is well cooked – no grease. And we talked to some regulars who said they have a darn good breakfast.

I briefly worked at a farm down the street from this place throwing hay. In that short time, I had the pleasure of experiencing what a true country kitchen used to be like. Stepping in here is like stepping back in time. The prices are fair, the food is incredible, and the service is friendly. I learned that eating a Sunshine Burger with all the fixins is a right of passage and happily obliged. Now, it is the golden standard to which I hold all other burgers. When I am able to bring my wife here from Canada finally, this is the first place I will take her. Never change, Sunshine, never change!
