The service was truly 5-star. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly, and open, which made the whole experience even better. This is the kind of spot you leave already thinking about coming back. Highly recommend if you love great Texas BBQ!
This was probably some of the worst BBQ I’ve tried. If you like cornbread, DONT ORDER THE CORNBREAD! It was covered with powdered sugar lol. I took one bite and realized it was mochi, corn mochi with a smidge of cornbread flavor and chunks of corn kernels.
The brisket was a little below average. Slightly decent flavor, not bad, but sliced into chunks with a huge strip of fat in the middle of every piece (check my pics). It was almost all fat. The bark was extremely salty and it reminded me of a poorly cooked pot roast meat.
The ribs tasted like they were freezer burned. They were dry and the only flavor they did have was from the sauce on them.
The regular barbq sauce tasted like a mild tomato sauce with a hint of ketchup tang. The hot bbq sauce tasted the same, but with an added buffalo wing flavor. I ended up using my own barbecue sauce from the fridge since this was take out.
The rice was the typical rice, nothing special, sticky white rice from a rice cooker. The white bread had a sour dirt aftertaste like it was stored in container with mold in it, but that’s expected from cheap gmo bread.
The sides weren’t very good either. The creamed corn was thick and very sweet. It tasted like cool whip or tapioca with corn. The potato salad was not your typical potato salad. It was small red potatoes that were cubed, undercooked and coated with a watery mustard dill dressing. The coleslaw and beans were the only sides that were ok, but they were bland.
All in all it was a very disappointing experience. Maybe we went on an off day and this place is usually better. I highly doubt it though lol. Makes me think all these people from Austin giving good reviews haven’t had good BBQ. Or BBQ sucks in Austin too lmao.
The two of us didn’t eat much of the food. Look at my pictures. My GF only took a few bites and said it was inedible. She’s from Houston so her BBQ standards are much higher than mine. I would love to be wrong and say I had some really good BBQ, but I honestly don’t know if good barbecue exists in Hawaii. Or at least I haven’t found anything good on Kauai or Oahu yet in 17 years. This was a $62 lesson that I will never repeat.
They are now more accessible than ever, and you can order “by the plate” or even “meat by the pound.” The “by the plate” comes with four slices of meat, which sounds small, but with two sides and a choice of rice or bread, you can get full surprisingly fast. My coworkers and I all ordered a plate; I had the brisket, they had the pork belly, briskets, and beef ribs. The brisket and pork belly were incredibly moist, soft, savory, and literally melted-in-your-mouth delicious. Their homemade BBQ sauce adds another delicious layer to the meal. Other items I’ve tried and loved include the pork ribs, beef ribs, and house sausage. The sides I remember are the beans, creamed corn, potato salad, and coleslaw—I especially love the creamed corn, beans, and coleslaw.
The restaurant has a chill, classic American BBQ vibe, and the aroma of barbecue fills the whole space.
I enjoy ordering the family pack for friends and family, but after eating it, all I want to do is pass out and hibernate.
This is one of the only American BBQ restaurants in Hawaii that I wholeheartedly recommend. My coworkers were skeptical at first, but after our meal, they were all thoroughly impressed!
Yes, the brisket was tender and the burnt ends were pretty good. However, the moist parts were only the very fatty sections of the slices. The meat is kept in a stainless warmer, no butcher paper. The brisket did have a good smoke ring and it’s a simple salt and pepper dry rub, as expected for Texans.
The potato salad was undercooked and had an unpleasant overwhelming amount of mustard and no mayo or egg or even paprika!
The beans were a combination of what I could see of pintos and a larger bean. Both types of beans were very undercooked as well. I couldn’t even mash the beans with a fork and there was zero taste of garlic or onion in it.
The sausage literally tasted like jerky. There was heavy tones of peppercorns and mild garlic. It was pleasant, but the texture wasn’t usual to a pork or beef sausage. Not even a Texas boar sausage.
They offered 2 types of sauce: sweet or spicy. Frankly, I couldn’t tell which was supposed to be spicy, but they tried to imitate a North Carolina tang style. Unfortunately, the orange colored one that was the wanna be NC sauce, also had an unpleasant strong mustard flavor over anything else it was seasoned with. The more red and chunky sauce was weird is all I’ll say.
Now myself and all my family members are sick and miserable.
