Since its opening in 1974, prime steaks and martinis have never gone out of style at this Palo Alto institution. The atmosphere is very clubby with fireplaces, dark wood, sports memorabilia and plush leather booths tucked into the many nooks throughout the dining room. Famous for their slow-roasted prime rib and hand-cut U.S.D.A Prime Steaks, they also offer fresh seafood, cold water lobster tail and succulent shellfish. The Bone-In Ribeye Steak is the Boss’ Favorite. Sundance is respected for serving the best food money can buy coupled with value & simplicity – a welcome relief for serious food & steak aficionados. The menu is supported by an award-winning wine list that features over 500 selections focusing on Napa Valley Cabernets.
A candlelit mahogany dining room sets the scene for Angus steaks, seafood & a 450-item wine list.

Fun time catching up with my ol’ college roommates. We ordered the Crisp Caesar Salad, The Shareholder’s Cut, Prime “Double Cut” Filet, Prime Ribeye Steak, Apple Pie a la Mode, Ghirardelli Hot Fudge Sundae, and Affogato al Caffe, plus way too many Old Fashions (lol). We sat at the bar instead of the main room this year to watch the Niners game.

I absolutely love the bar area of the Sundance restaurant. My friend and I had lunch in front of the fireplace in the bar. Cash was our great, attentive friendly waiter. The Aperol Spritz drinks were delicious and the salads great too. I can’t recommend this place enough. I used to go more often and fell out of the habit, but I will def be back. The place is a classic!!!

Hands down, the best steak I’ve ever had! Service was top-notch and the atmosphere was perfection. Every bite was a flavor explosion. Would absolutely come back for that steak again

Had the pleasure of dining at one of Bay Area’s finest steakhouses, Sundance The Steakhouse, located at El Camino Real in Palo Alto, CA. Started with sautéed sea scallops and hibachi ahi sashimi. I guess I chose a day where there was a big party and waited a bit before we received out entrees. Luckily the appetizers were yummylicious! Heard so much about Sundance’ prime rib and this dish most definitely did not disappoint! We ended our dinner, with their famous Sundance mud pie. Simply delicious

Sundance Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Palo Alto delivered a stellar dining experience centered around their signature prime rib. Starting with a cup of New England clam chowder, the meal set the tone with its comforting creaminess and rich seafood flavors, immediately standing out as a memorable appetizer. The highlight was the prime rib, beautifully cooked and perfectly marbled, with just the right balance of savory depth and subtle seasoning. The accompanying sautéed mushrooms added an earthy, umami punch, while steamed carrots and broccoli provided vibrant color and a refreshing contrast that balanced the richness of the beef. The au jus and creamy horseradish sauce further elevated each bite, making the dish both classic and indulgent.
The ambiance at Sundance combined traditional steakhouse elegance with welcoming warmth. Crisp white linens, attentive service, and well-crafted drinks added to the sense of occasion, making the meal feel special without being stuffy. Every course was prompt, thoughtfully plated, and made for a relaxing, memorable evening.

We’ve eaten here a number of times over the years for both lunch and dinner, and the service and food is really good. Thomas, our server is excellent, and he’s been our server a few times. You get Boudin’s sourdough bread which is really good. We’ve had the Tempura mushrooms and fillet mignon spring rolls, which are addictive. The lobster bisque, ahi sashimi are very good.
Unfortunately, when I had the Ribeye it was slightly chewy and I’m a Ribeye guy. The Chilean seabass and New York steak were delicious. Also each entree comes with a choice of two sides.
Update: Recently decided to have dinner at the bar with Oz, the bartender who’s nice and attentive. Everything we had was really good! Tempura mushroom, Chilean seabass, jumbo prawns linguine, and of course some drinks.
Several weeks ago, we had dinner at the bar with Oz, who’s fantastic! My wife wanted fish, so Oz recommended the grilled fresh Salmon, which was really very good. We also had the Prawns Puttanesca, that was also really good, and you get a lot.
We recently went again for dinner and they gave us a nice booth. We were surprised to see that Thomas was working and was our server. He’s one of the best! We started with a cup of Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque. For a bottle of wine Thomas suggested the Sinegal and it was a really good choice. Our entree’s were a New York steak that comes with two sides and a Wagyu A5 Ribeye that also comes with two sides. Of course the New York Steak was really good but the Wagyu A5 was absolutely delicious! The price of the Wagyu A5 was really good compared to other restaurants that offer the Wagyu A5. This time we didn’t have any room for one of their really good desserts.

Palo Alto has many options for great food experiences. Sundance had an amazing staff and warm ambiance but several of the steaks missed the mark. My advice, if you like rare, ask for extra rare. Medium rare…go rare…and so on. Appetizers and deserts were wonderful and the wine was very reasonable.

I recently dined at Sundance The Steakhouse, and while the experience was overall enjoyable, there were some aspects that could be improved.
The prime rib was very good—tender and flavorful—but it didn’t quite live up to the comparisons with House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. The quality was there, but the experience didn’t feel the same. That said, I’d still recommend it.
The highlight of the meal was definitely the sides. I had either the garlic fries or truffle fries (can’t quite remember), but they were absolutely amazing—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Their deep-fried items are surprisingly excellent, with the tempura shrimp standing out as one of the best I’ve had. The strawberry arugula salad was also phenomenal, fresh, and well-balanced.
Service was just okay. Our server wasn’t bad, but they didn’t really engage much, and the interaction felt a little dry. It wasn’t a bad experience, but it didn’t enhance the meal either.
Overall, I’d give this place four stars, but it’s almost a three. The food, especially the deep-fried options and salad, pushes it up, but service and the prime rib experience could use some improvements. I’d still recommend it, but with a few caveats.

This place is so not my vibe. But I still had a really nice time. It’s very very old school. The service is incredible. Lots of people who are really good at what they do and have a lot of pride. The menu has quite a few items you might not expect. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and the au jus it came with was incredible. I even asked them if I could take it home with me and they happily packed it up. This is definitely a place I would take my grandparents if I was trying to impress them. I typically prefer weird fusion modern restaurants, but I still really enjoy the food here.

Went here for a special occasion. Parking was tight. It’s very dim inside. All forgivable of the food was great, but sadly it wasn’t. Mine Ribeye was fine, but my partner’s steak took a long while to come out and when it did it had a really bad taste to it. We sent it back and the staff agreed it tasted bad. It took forever to get a replacement and by then we had just shared my Ribeye. Such a disappointment. I’ve had better steaks at Texas Roadhouse for a fraction of the cost here.
