I just had the best meal at Sumo Sushi in Kingstown —honestly, it felt like a little hidden gem. The guy running the place? Total sweetheart. He greeted me like I was family, asked what I liked, then walked me through every roll like it was his kid’s science project, how he presses the rice just right, why he picks certain fish over others. Super patient, super kind. You could tell he loves what he does.
The spot itself is tiny, but cozy like stepping into someone’s warm kitchen. Low lights, soft music, no rush. And the food? Insane. Fresh, balanced, every bite perfect. My 9 yo got the Samurai rool and the dragon roll that melted in my mouth when I had a piece I got a Korean dish named Hae-dup Bab, it was delicious. If you’re anywhere near Kingston, go before he closes the door. You’ll leave full, happy, and wanting to return. Five stars, no question.

I’ve been debating trying this spot for over a year since I started at URI, and I wish I hadn’t! The food was delicious and the owner is lovely to talk to. After talking with him for a bit he allowed me to try some tuna belly, which was delicious. Definitely coming back!

Formally a sushi restaurant in Newport for many years I’ve been going to Sumo Sushi here in Kingston for about a year now and the sushi is great. Their rolls are purist and not covered in 10 different things to hide the small amount of fish you actually get at other places.

Best sushi place in Rhode Island. The prices are very cheap and the food is absolutely amazing. Getting the food was absolutely fast and was very good. Small restaurant, but it doesn’t get very busy. Parking is very easy to find!

Literally the highest quality sushi I’ve ever had. The owner is very proud of his craft and we even had a chat about how to find the best quality tuna and why his fish is the best. I will definitely be back here again 10/10 would recommend.

this sushi was so good!! i stopped in to grab some californa rolls cus my local stop and shop was out and it was sooo tasty, the miso soup was so flavourful too! the entire place was just run by one lovely man, who quickly got me my order! he was very polite and kind. i would definetly come back!!

I’ve been coming here for years, and nothing else compares! Steve, the owner, is incredibly kind. If you’re a regular, he’ll treat you to miso soup on chilly days and offer samples while you wait—but I’ve never had to wait long. There are plenty of traditional rolls to choose from, and if you’re unsure what to order, he’ll ask about your preferred protein and create something special just for you. I absolutely love this place and recommend it to everyone I know! The best thing on the menu is the Crab Crunch Handroll … delicious!

First time ever going and the bag happened to rip and spill food in the parking lot. Steve, I assume, came out and offered to remake the food that had spilled. So so kind of him. And once we got home, VERY good sushi!!! I really recommend!! Support small businesses!
